2004-12-02 00:55:00 | Making an old machine for the kids, got a choice of a Cyrix m2 or an AMD k6-2. Both 225 mhz. Which one is best? Cheers

2004-12-02 01:09:00 | And if u only have 1 mobo would both cpus fit in it anyway?? Unless u have 2 mobos. I had a cyrix, dunno if it was m2 or whatever, but it was hopeless! Cyrix arent the best of cpus to use.

2004-12-02 01:30:00 | Also add my opinion to the AMD. However 225MHz has me puzzled. I thought the slowest K6-2 was 300 MHz, though the K6 went down to 166MHz, and the Cyrix 686 MII came in equivalent PR ratings like PR266 with an actual speed of 233MHz. The K6-2 can also have an FSB of 100MHz, whereas the Cyrix was odd with bus speeds of 66MHz, 75MHz 83Mhz and 100Mhz depending on the motherboard capabilities.

2004-12-02 01:54:00 | I had a K6-2 for many years before I handed it on to my brother for his Email etc. The speed is about 500mhz and it runs Windows XP just fine with 256meg memory and a 80gig drive. I may have upgraded the Bios, but I can't remember. I have found it to be very reliable.

2004-12-02 06:26:00 | Cyrix m2 (which was named m2 300 even thogh it ran at around 233) use socket 370 amd k6 225 (should be k6 233) use socket 7 so it depends on the mobo you have. If you have the choice of cpu and boards go with the amd k6. The cyrix m2 is gutless and the amd will stomp its guts out in anything requiring some muscle. | the highlander (245) | |
