299594 2004-12-04 08:11:00 I have recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows etc into my Brother's old PC ( H P Pavilion 6306 with AMD K6 processor Unsure about the mother board with on-board video and sound )
Thought I would up grade it up abit, replaced modem to 56K that was good.
And then I up graded the ram, pulled one of the old ram that was fitted and found that it was 64K pc 100 double sided ram.
So I put in 256 pc 133 ram with this on the mother board and fired it up.
Now I have a problem with the display.I suspect I have somehow damaged the video part of the mother board. The monitor does display but some parts of the image is distorted, missing or the words turn to gobbity- kook.
What I did see at one stage was a message at least parts of a message where it said something about component incompatibility.

So the question is have I begged up something?
And mite I get around it by adding a video card to fix problem.

Thanks John

299595 2004-12-04 08:20:00 have you got the correct drivers installed ?

what ram did you install as the max is

>256 MB (2 x 128 MB DIMM)

(no doubt double sided as well)

299596 2004-12-04 08:32:00 Yes I did install the correct drivers, infact it running great no problem at all.
It's the adding of the ram that's made the difference.

I installed 1x 256MB and 1x 64MB double sided.

I guessing the max not a good thing to exceed, tweak'e

Thanks

299597 2004-12-04 08:46:00 I think the problem is that the max RAM is 2 x 128, so 1 x 256 is not useful. There is probably insufficient address lines to address 256 in any slot.

As the video RAM will be from the system RAM, that would explain the distortion.

299598 2004-12-04 09:01:00 OK, so it looks like I've done something bad .

But I have replaced the original ram but I still have the distortion in the display.

Does this mean I have buggered something on the board

Is the work around to install a vid card.

Thanks John

From what GF says, that does sound like a possibility. just remember though that you needn't spend more than about $40 on a cheapie to test it with.

And yes my Brother knew , he lives next door.

Found an old S3 vid card and got the drivers of the net. Ill give it ago.
May be Ill up date my old tnt 2 card to something better and he can have my old one.

And get the ram sorted a bit better next time .

thanks for the help John

299603 2004-12-06 04:26:00 John you should be able to get and old s3 for $5-00 thats all it needs.

Go into bios note all the settings.

Shut it down, disconnect power, Do the short comos jumper take out battery thing, take out all the ram, give it 24 hrs, Put back in battery, put in original ram, start and see, never know your luck.
