A2 is good but remember its scanner and not a real time virus program it does not monitor pc activty and runs only when exercuted

Oh for those that are interested AVG 7 free has a command line scanner so if you need to you can f8 boot command line only navigate to the program files...grisoft etc check in the install directory for the exe (this machine does not have avg on it and I cant remember the exe name)

299392 2004-12-08 11:45:00 When I was looking for decent free anti-virus programs a long time ago, I narrowed it down to AVG and avast!

I had heard of AVG before, but found avast! through an online directory. And as picky as it might sound, I chose avast! because it I found it more aesthetically pleasing than AVG.

I'm also a fan of configuring avast!, because I love it's features. I'm not up to date on AVG, but avast! has on-access protection for networks, email, P2P programs, IM programs, and your hard drive, of course.

Another up-and-coming contender to watch is ClamWin. It currently doesn't have on-access protection, but someone around here said the next major release would, which I think was due in the first quarter of 2005.

299393 2004-12-08 19:11:00 sorry but I tested Clamwin and I got infected with psw.small.b as well as few others while testing even though Clam was up to date (both engine and dif' files) it did not even pick them up (including the ecair test file) . However my previous Virus checker did once reinstalled. beama (111)
299394 2004-12-08 21:04:00 ClamWin is still in development, you must remember. And the fact remains that it doesn't have on-access testing, so it would be easy to get infected without ClamWin knowing.

ClamWin also doesn't have heuristic scanning capabilities, plus there's a tiny possibility that the ClamAV team had released an updated reference file by the time you reinstalled your previous scanner. Tiny, but still there. ;)

299395 2004-12-09 05:11:00 I use both AVG and Avast (on different computers).

I rate Avast as the better one. Their updating of reference files and programme is automatic and very fast.

299396 2004-12-09 06:27:00 Hi Folks.
Another fan of AVG here. I have the purchased 7 on an XP PRO box and the free 7 on an older Win 98 box. Similar to car club fans - I find that people believe in the AV program that does not appear to let them down.
I quit Nortons and a couple of others because of the lack of interested support when I sought help a few times. The response I have had from two queries from Grisoft about AVG has been first-class.

299397 2004-12-09 07:28:00 Hi Antonia
I did not have a clue where Te Awanga was so did a search. I see that it is only 15 mins from Napier (marvellous city !). Also that you have Kim Crawford wines etc out there. Must have a look next time Mrs Misty and I are down that way.
Misty :D

299398 2004-12-09 23:10:00 I have Avast and it is great !

AVG 7 does not want to install on my system - says insufficient system resources - ha ha - 1gig RAM, 3gig chip. Must be a conflict somewhere.

Found another free AV program: "AntiVir"
http://www.free-av.com/

It is a German program. Downloading now. Avast is good but I do like to have a back up / 2nd AV program.

Dont bother I have tried it and it was sh|t, but thats just MHO

If you want a second I would recomend the stinger, you down load a new copy each time you want to do a scan, as it is just a scanner.

Yea, I agree Rob - it is not good.

As for Stinger, I downloaded it and discovered that XP's System Restore has to be disabled, and that means losing all restore points :O so I did not install it.
