299514 2004-12-04 02:13:00 Hi I have been thinking for some time about upgrading 98SE I'm not sure about XP. I have seen in the Loot (like the Trade & Exchange) windows Me (is that another name for windows 2000 or is 2000 another OS) and NT. What do you guys recommend)
Can I get them Second hand or is there some kind of block on the CD that stops it from being used twice?

299515 2004-12-04 02:24:00 You can use a CD until it wears out. :D

Windows ME is descended from W9X; Windows 2000 is the more secure NT based one. W2k can be more secure. Either is usable, though many people will say that Me is no good at all. ;-) I'd suggest W2k.

XP requires significantly more resources ...

I use WinME and very happy with it

299518 2004-12-04 02:29:00 Windows ME isn't Windows 2000 . Theyre different Operating systems .

Trust me, you DONT want Windows ME . Its one of the worst versions of Windows out . If u buy it secondhand NT or 2000 is OK as long as u get everything when u buy it (the original CD/COA/the product code etc) .

XP on the other hand, maybe pirated, and u wouldnt know this until u do a clean install, or if it hasnt been updated, and then u decide to install SP1 . That'll soon tell you . And whether it'll activate or not is another matter . Depends on how long ago it was last installed/ activated .

I would do a clean install NOT update / upgrade from a previous version .

A lot of ppl tend to have probs with installing 2000 / XP etc over previous versions . You also have to make sure (with XP), that u have the right specs (speed, the ram, hard drive space available) as well .

Or else it'll be slow as . . . . And you'll notice

299519 2004-12-04 02:31:00 Firstly, what are the specifications of your computer? I would not recommend installing Win XP on anything with less than 256MB RAM .

Secondly, why do you want to upgrade? If your computer is more than a couple of years old then I would personally stick with Win 98SE .

If you still want to upgrade you could look at getting Win 2000 (it is not Win ME, that is another version) providing you have at least 128MB RAM .

Providing the seller of second hand versions also hands over the key then you will have no problem "using it twice" .

I wouldn't touch NT4 for home use, it is more more business use and has a lack of readily available drivers . It also has little (if any) support for USB .

As already mentioned, what are the specs of the computer you are wishing to upgrade?

Windows 2000 and W2k are two different versions??? I didn't know that. :O

Always thought that W2K was just an abbreviation for Windows 2000.

299522 2004-12-04 02:41:00 Correct. Windows 2000 = W2000 = W2k :_| I sometimes (often?) do sloppy editing of a post, then hit the button so things like this do happen. ;-) Graham L (2)
299523 2004-12-04 03:10:00 why do you want to upgrade the OS?

if its all working ok don't bother, go spend the $$$ somewhere else (more ram, faster cpu ??)
