300124 2004-12-06 18:38:00 Just bought a 2nd hand Netvista
1.7GHz CPU
Took the cover off to find out what the noise was & found a spare floppy power cable rubbing on the CPU fan.
Left the cover off while booting it to find the CPU Fan will spin when booting then stop when XP has loaded.
Also spins when shutting down
Did a Defrag just to see if it would start spinning with a bit of load on but nope, no spin
Has a strange looking heatsink, lots of thin fins
Is this an IBM thing or is the fan knackered?
I would have though a 1.7 would need lots of cooling

Very quiet machine with no fan going though.
Thanks

300125 2004-12-06 18:57:00 I think something wrong in there.

I have a couple of netvista here they dont behave like yours, has someone put the fan wiring on back to front?

IBM heatsink very finny close together mill ali. Should be conpackt but solid.

Should say IBM or FOXCON.

Cabel stuck in fan, maybee youth computer??

300126 2004-12-06 20:19:00 Thanks for the reply drb1.
I got it sorted, there are several Fan controller options in the BIOS & I've changed it to always on.
Next question is:
XP is loaded onto a partition (NOCD)
If I use ghost to clone the disk to a new 80GB will it recognize the hidden IBM partition & copy that as well?

300127 2004-12-06 21:14:00 Have a look in the seen partitions in the gohst display, you can abort instead of completing the clone, or you may need something to unhide said partition so that gohst can clone it. if gohst see, gohst should clone, as long as file format is compatible with gohst.

A lot of netvista had/have an IBM version of doze that installed with all ibm drivers on 1 or 2 disks, as oppoesed to a hidden partition. Disks just labeled as ibm netvista recovery 1 and 2.
