300060 2004-12-06 10:31:00 Hello all.

I have a limited understanding of networks, and am planning to set one (home LAN) up soon. Must one buy a set of IP addresses to use for this LAN if the clients will access the internet (dial-up, dynamic IPs) throught a gateway?. Can I simply give abitruary IPs to my NICs or is this like driving with a made-up rego plate?

Cheers, Ben.

300061 2004-12-06 10:45:00 There are a range of private IP addresses defined by the IANA so that home users do not need to buy IP addresses. They are:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

There are others, but they're the only two I suggest considering.

I recommend you go with 192.168.0.x.

Just name each PC 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4 etc.

Then, call the gateway PC with the modem 192.168.0.1 (see I left that out)

I'm confused about the IP addres from the ISP. I understand that the IP address of the gateway's NIC could be 192.168.0.1 but what about the IP address allocated by Xtra when I dial up?

300063 2004-12-06 10:58:00 Ah.

Better explanation here:

XTRA ----- Gateway [202.185.123.456] ||| Gateway [192.168.0.1] ---- Computers

The gateway has two IP addresses, a public and a private. The public is assigned by your ISP and can be seen by others in the world. The private is chosen by you, and will only work within your network.

The router (gateway)'s job is to translate between the two networks - yours, and the internet.

So, your PC sends a packet, it goes to the gateway PC. The gateway PC then routes it on to the internet using your public IP, and routes any response packets to the correct internal IP

300064 2004-12-06 11:00:00 The IP from Xtra you do not have to pay for. It changes every time you dial up, and is included as part of the service you get when you buy Xtra's services. This IP address is assigned to your modem - it is different to the IP address assigned to your LAN connection.
