2004-12-06 03:20:00 | My friends computer is doing weird things.. When my friend, or her daughter turns on MSN, MSN sends me this: Message from xxxxxxxx at 15:27:54 Your buddy has a new Buddy Icon. Take a look! http://buddies.fun buddyicons.com @Ic on:none|Version:01.03.00.06|Icon: none@ ive put spaces in the link to disable it just in case the link is effectively "get virus here". it takes me to a site that redirects me twice, ultimatly telling me that it wont deal with me because i have a linux box! and if i quote it back at her, she gets an empty message. theres also a tool bar that wasnt there before on her machine.... She is running windows,i dont know what version. My friend usually runs trillian, which doesnt send this message, just MSN does this. Her Antivirus program detectected and "removed a virus" yesterday, but MSN is still doing it.... Anyone heard of this? google hasn't! :-) Chris

2004-12-06 04:10:00 | i really don't think we're talking about the same thing here. The problem is not that shes getting those annoying spam pop ups, the problem is 1. A new tool bar on her machine 2.Yesterday a virus was detected, along with the beginning of the problem 3. MSN messenger is sending out the link i dissected and posted above to anyone it can, yet cannot see when its quoted back, so at some level, some filter is stopping her from seeing the very message "she"(or more likely MSN messenger) is sending out. To quote grc.com The first thing to understand is that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger"

2004-12-06 04:26:00 | I know they're not the same program. Windows messenger is now upto 5.1 and the other 6.2 or 7 beta something. BUT both are as bad as each other lol. If you think u have some kind of virus, go here and do a scan. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ or go here and get this www.simplysup.com install update and do a scan. What version of MSN messenger has she got? 6.2?

Reading their EULA here (www.funwebproducts.com), show that it installs a search toolbar plus all that buddie icon stuff. Get her to look at Add/Remove for an entry called "MY WEB SEARCH BROWSER" and see if uninstalling it helps. |

2004-12-06 05:23:00 | Hi JenC I shall ring her cell phone later tonight when its cheap. At the moment, her daughter is online, and probably will be for the rest of the night, thus tying up the computer, and disabling the landline for speech. funwebproducts.com....... Hmmmmmm :-) Chris
