299636 2004-12-04 09:31:00 Hi there,

My current problem is that when I play games (it is worst with GTA Vice City), the CPU temp rises to only around 45 degrees (fine) but the fan RPM increases from around 2200RPM usually (just working in Windows) to over 4,600RPM and sounds like a screaming jet engine.

I don't know how this works, but it is significantly louder than even if I connect it straight to the 12V from the PSU. But the motherboard wouldn't over-volt it would it?

CPU is a Celeron D 2.4Ghz @ 2.4Ghz (FSB 533), with a stock HSF, and graphics card is 9600SE 128MB.

In about 8 minutes it settles back down to 2200 RPM like normal.

The strange thing is, when doing very intensive stuff like encoding video, it only gets to around 3,000 RPM at the same temp (45 degrees).

Basicly, no matter what task I do, if it is reasonably intensive the CPU temp goes to 45 degrees and stays there, and the fan speed variates to keep it there.

Oddly, even if I am not even PLAYING a game (ie, have it sitting in the main menu) it does EXACTLY the same thing ?:|

3,000 RPM is noisy, and 4,600 RPM is really, really loud, nearly painful. Is there any way I can calm it down?

Cheers George

299637 2004-12-04 09:42:00 Just dont play the game....

The fan is doing its job and keeping it CPU cool - And its doing a better job than my Laptop does (Although laptops normally run quite hot).

Basically the harder the CPU works, the higher temp its going to get, meaning its going to need more cooling from a fan thats spinning faster!

Hope this helps

299638 2004-12-04 10:12:00 Yeah I know...

Just gotta get it out. Yes I know ninja, I should have used notepad. So sorry :p

Sometimes it makes me wanna pull the fan plug out... But that might not be too good for it! :D

Cheers George

299639 2004-12-04 10:21:00 fan controllers start from around $30 ( physical ones ) and you can always download software that can limit the speed of you fans , then if you feel it is working to hard you can turn him/her down noone (22)
299640 2004-12-04 10:32:00 But then it would just overheat....

No, I think the solution is more non-existant than that. Well, unless I find a good way to improve heat flow without spending money.

I have excellent room in my case (like, neat cables etc), but I find a case fan makes no difference (adds to the noise though).

If I underclock down to around 2Ghz, it calms down significantly, but the game is jerky then. Games*

Does it with _all_ games, but GTA VC is worst.

But I paid a 20 minute drive to Whitby ... er ... I mean $39.95 ;) for it!

299642 2004-12-04 10:36:00 in the bios there may be a setting to max out the fan after a certain temp , so as soon as you get to 45 it maxes out even if your cpu is not maxed out. You could invest in a slient fan so even if it does go fast it wont be that loud noone (22)
299643 2004-12-04 11:38:00 Get one with smaller blades that rotates more :-D Chilling_Silence (9)
299644 2004-12-05 21:24:00 arnt you a bit young to be playing GTA anyway ... noone (22)
299645 2004-12-05 22:32:00 >3,000 RPM is noisy, and 4,600 RPM is really, really loud, nearly painful. Is there any way I can calm it down?

4600 rpm is not overly fast. mine does over 5000 and the other 6800 (there are bearable).

check if it is just that one fan causeing it. you could also have a psu fan speeding up adding to the niose.

quality of fan, amount of dust and the type of case can make a big difference. i actually sealed up some of the airvents of a mates pc just to cut down on the cpu fan noise (no increase in temps).

the other thing is you may just be used to very quiet pc's ;-)
