299790 2004-12-06 00:06:00 Now ... I wanna hear Metla's thoughts on this beast :p george12 (7)
299791 2004-12-06 01:37:00 New:

Launched the two versions, Intel and AMD

Intel is now 8x 3.6 Xeon = 28.8GHz
AMD is 8x Opteron 2.4 = 19.2GHz

Methinks the opteron will whip ass :D

Price of Xeon version (8 CPU) is now $27,990. 4 CPU version is the same price.

AMD equivalent is same price as Intel (but better :p)

I humbly disagree, I see it more as an interesting and very enlightening thread on what you could blow your money on if your insane or win lotto.

Very nice rig george, but a shame to think that 5 years from now that something similar will be on trademe for 200 bucks.
Still have a pcworld ad from yonks ago talking about a 486 powerhouse for $20,000 odd
whoever bougt one of those must still be paying it off and feeling slightly cheesed that he didn't understand moore's law

299795 2004-12-06 08:05:00 thats insane, massive amount of power :p but do all these 4 cpu's work as one? they would work all seperatly like a dual cpu board wouldnt they? Prescott (11)
299796 2004-12-06 09:42:00 All 8 Prescott... Unless you're looking at the old version :p:D.

It's just like a dual cpu, but 8 not 2.

Cheers

299797 2004-12-06 09:44:00 so there is one motherboard with 8 cpu sockets , is it ATX , must be a pretty tight fit - 8 heatsinks side by side , think about the noise noone (22)

It's not actually seriously on sale Jen. I would not have made the post if it was. For one, I have no skill or experience when it comes to uber-high power server systems, and couldn't build it. For another, I was just shopping around random places on google NZ, I'm not even signed up with the supplier of 8-cpu boards, or 500GB "hyperdrives".

So for anyone interested in it:

Sorry mate, it's not for sale
