Graham,

People are always the problem, no?

You obviously dont have a typo issue.

There are reliability issues with any removable media, an off site mirror is not viable as yet.

Many in commerciall opperations are complaining about the reliability/safe reusability of CD/ DVD rw for backup after only two or 3 RW'S, even when kept in one of those Carousell thing's (name ?).

The other option is anothr drive but I dont like the dollars on that just yet. another 9 months, Then I can probably justify buying 1 a year and rotating them, and selling the old ones, allways using the newest for back up. an option I thought of.

When you do a backup you should always ensure you do a compare as any medium can fail for any variaty of reasons. I had two CD-Rs fail but because the compare was done it was picked up at the time so no damage done. DVD's are the same and can and do fail. I have one that burned perfectly, compared perfectly and was copied to another drive about a week later. One month later however there is one 350MB file the just will not be read from any DVD reader anywhere.

This is one of the issues my Friends/advisers raised.

How many times had it be re written or was it a straight R?

They still swear buy zip 100/250 for their daily alterations backups, but this is not viable for 200GB.

It was a DVD+RW that had been written to once with that data on it.

I have an older SCSI Zip 100 and a SCSI Jazz 1GB. The Zip I found was not that reliable either. You may have heard about the click of death with Zip drives. The Jazz was good but not that fast and the disks expensive at the time.

They are just sitting around if anyone wants to make offers on them.

300122 2004-12-09 05:01:00 The only trouble I ever had with ½ reel to reel tapes was caused by a drive glitch. The servos put a bit too much tension on and 2' of ½" tape suddenly became 20', 0.1" wide. 100 ips drives have lots of torque. But such accidents are why you have three copies. ;-)

But you could only get 40MB on a 2400' tape at 1600 bpi. GCR gave a bit over 100MB. NASA had millions of tape reels of data. They were working two shifts of students putting tape contents onto CDs at one stage. I wonder what they are copying the CDs onto now. :D

All removable media is a consumable though, I have had the occasional zip missbehave.

Ist write on a dvd, bit sad.

I have a brand new 250 drive and a 100 doing nothing but may be useful on day.

I have a mobile rack modded to take a zip, Im looking at dooing the same to a usb mobile they can be very useful occasionally.
