Maybe indeed... my second-to-last PC was a Dell Optiplex, it was pretty quiet.

And noone, WTF!!!!

I'm not young to be playing GTA..... :O How young do you think I am?

299647 2004-12-05 23:02:00 turn the music up or get decent headphones.

Problem solved (i lived with an AMD Athlon XP system for 2 years - you get the idea)

299648 2004-12-05 23:12:00 :p Dave good idea.

Now people say that 4600RPM is _not_ very fast. Does anyone know what the fan is rated? It has no info on the fan :(

299649 2004-12-05 23:17:00 4600 is fast for me , my fans never seem to go over 2500rpm noone (22)
299650 2004-12-05 23:26:00 >CPU is a Celeron D 2.4Ghz @ 2.4Ghz (FSB 533), with a stock HSF, and graphics card is 9600SE 128MB.

sorry i missed what fan cpu/heatsink you had before.

all the stock intell fans that i have comes across have been very quiet. i would be inclined to look at case and location of pc.

cheap cases tend to virbrate making the fan sound louder. having the pc under the desk is a lot quieter than having it on the desk.

299651 2004-12-05 23:47:00 Cheap case? Hell yes.

The rattly thing was $40 including 400W psu. Should I be worried?? (It is wholesale price though)

Blame me for giving in to the cheapness of Hairong...

But no, it is pitch not vibration that gets to me :(

299652 2004-12-05 23:51:00 i had one of those cases but if biffed it - it was crap as hell , cheap generic fans may have the RPM but they are nosiy as hell - having the same problem with my fans , so loud and they only go around 2500 RPM , plus my stock heatsink noone (22)
299653 2004-12-07 07:03:00 make sure the front part of the case flows enough air then tape all the side air inlets. if this causes temp to go up (poor front case airflow) then take the tape off the bottom left side. this should cut out a lot of the noise.

> Should I be worried??

cheap psu's tend to go BOOM ! and sometimes will fry the pc while doing so.

299654 2004-12-07 07:28:00 If only PSU warranties covered the parts they kill...

Nah, I swapped the PSU for a slightly better one with a lifetime warranty. It's a 400W AcBel w/Active PFC.

I don't really mind it that much anymore (used to it now) so I won't worry.

299655 2004-12-09 00:02:00 > I find a case fan makes no difference (adds to the noise though) .

I bought a Vantec Stealth fan in the hope of cooling the computer down (especially in this warmer weather) but found that it wasn't as stealth-like as the name and advertising pitches suggest, nor did it seem to make any difference whatsoever to the case and CPU temperatures as George suggests .

BUT, I found that after installing gel mounts in the case and a Zalman resistor cable, the fan has become much quieter AND actually cools the computer by at least 5 degrees!

It seems like the fan was spinning so fast that it was producing extra heat itself, and / or it was drawing cooler intake air out so fast that it completely bypassed the CPU and its fan . (My case has one of those side vents and a funnel that directs the air to over the CPU . ) So here's a tip - balance the CF/M of the case fan with that of the CPU fan and see if that helps .
