| 300109 | 2004-12-07 00:30:00 | Have you got any good tapes? If not, it's not worth bothering with. QI tapes are not reliable, and the tapes cost a ridiculous amount. The only tapes (apart from traditional ½";-)) which are any good as backup are DAT, DLT, and the other new one. Those drives cost big money. Travan and QIC are cheap drives, with expensive tapes. Good hardware costs more. You can buy a DVD-RW drive for about $100 these days. :D If you want to play with the drive, Linux supports Travan, and there are number of very good backup packages. I think one is "Amanda". |

| 300115 | 2004-12-07 22:19:00 | Godfather, Thank you, I only want to do major spanned backups on my Raid "nearly 200gb", just for insurance. The drive price was right. Apart from practice, I hope Ii never need it. Tape v dvd rw, strong argument, commercial is still tape dialated because of the "protected" data face of the medium. Now a dual layer dvd coverd like a ZIP 250 has potentiall. $100-00 dvd-rw leeming, electric city, one of that crew, with nero 6 freind got 1, of course I had to put it in make it work and get him dvd shrink. Dual layers are around 180 at the mo. IfIi was going to buy myself another dvd burner Ii would go that way as they are comming with easy firmware upgrade progs to. A. |

| 300116 | 2004-12-08 03:17:00 | 200 GB is a problem . But I'm seriously doubtful about the reliability of Travan or any QI tapes . The bit density is just too high . Always do a read and compare after writing a tape . That will make sure that stuff got on to it . It won't necesssarily mean that you can get the stuff off some months later . I suppose that the main going for you is the relative reliability of the disk drives . :D Unfortunately, you've always got the total unreliability of people to worry about . :_| |
