300659 2004-12-07 22:28:00 Hi all.
You may have seen my other thread about my PC troubles, well, i think its my Motherboard thats gone, so it may be time for a new one.
I haven't really been following the latest tech in this area recently, so i don't really no whats what, so i have a few Q's.

1) Is it time to go 64bit??
I've been running a AMD 1800Xp, and use my pc for 2 things - net, and games, will it make a difference (a big difference) if i do go 64bit, i'll probably stay low end for the mean time tho - like a Athlon 64 bit 2800, or am i better off getting a good 32bit CPU fopr the smae price ($220)

2) if i do go 64, or even if i don't, what are the latest chipset's out? I see nForce 3 is out, but is this only for the 64bit CPU's?

3) PCI-Express, is it also time for this? I hope not! As i don't have the $$ to get a new vid card as well!

4) and is Windows 64bit edition out yet? Whens that coming out, and how much will that cost?

I'm only really wanting to spend around $150 on the motherboard, whether i go 64bit or 32bit, any one recomend some good ones?
Thanks
Alex

nForce 3 ultra for socket 930 (64-bit)
Nforce 3 250 for socket 754 (cheep 64-bit)

No, don't pannic. AND hasn't made a chipset that supports PCI-e yet. And for your video card, it wouldn't be nessicary

I duno.

300661 2004-12-07 23:01:00 pci express maybe 4x faster then AGP but will there be any games in the near future that will be worth spending more on it now , when you wont see any good preformance increase because the software cannot utilize the buses full power, Agp has a lot of life yet , with more better chips coming out all the time on it and even the cards on the AGP bus out now are very good. Pci-e may become more main stream and more needed when Longhorn comes out ( which will prob be never so you dont have to worry ) noone (22)
300662 2004-12-07 23:02:00 A AMD 64 2800 is only 1.8GHZ , currently and i mean currently the only thing that supports 64bit is Linux so its really up to you noone (22)
300663 2004-12-07 23:05:00 Cool, thansk for that.

are the Nforce 3 250 for socket 754 (cheep 64-bit) chipsets ok tho??
I've ruled it down to these m/bs:

GIGABYTE K8NS nForce3 250 chipset $150

GIGABYTE K8NS-PRO nForce3 250 $200 (same as above, just a few extra features, AND dual Bios, so if the same thing happens again - i'll be ok!)

MSI K8N Neo-FSR Socket 754 $170

They're all pretty similar... just gotta pick one out!

300664 2004-12-07 23:07:00 yea, well i've been playing all the latest games ok on my AMD 1800, which is only 1.5Ghz.
And i'm tight on $$ - i mean i hadn't planned this purchase, just came about due to my other one stuffing up, and i figure that i'll settle for the cheap CPU now, and can always upgrade later

300665 2004-12-07 23:13:00 imo when AMD begin to support pci - e they might change the CPU socket etc , please someone correct me if i am wrong noone (22)

I would go for this one.

> MSI K8N Neo-FSR Socket 754 $170
na, not MSI.

AMD has just brought out low end cpu's (300+) on socket 939. It would be worth getting a socket 939 motherboard and cpu because socket 939 has duel memory something and is better + later on you could put and Athalon FX-59 or what ever is out when you need to upgrade.

btw: where are you buying it from? Ascent is a good shop and VERY good for replacements etc.

300667 2004-12-07 23:16:00 Really.... do get the socket 939 motheboard and CPU. That way you have a very upgradable system fus1_n (3818)
300668 2004-12-07 23:18:00 there is an amd pci-e chipset btw, Nforce 4. Im not sure If we can get them here, but they are around lagbort (5041)
