| 300541 | 2004-12-07 08:22:00 | Pent 150 196 ram 10 gig H/D S3 Trio 64 card realtek NIC when trying to set up and activating a modem under fc2 I get the following error message failed to activate myconnection error 8 I have restarted the network service, rebooted, changed the port id ie /dev/modem.... tty0 and the rest of the range. When trying to activate there is a click and low hiss sound as if the modem is being started The modem does work nativaly under linux (runs wonderfully well under RH 7.2) google revealed that this was a script error but gave no fixes. I really donot what to down grade even though it takes approx it takes 3 cups of coffee and episode of Shortland Street, waiting for the Pent 150 to boot under FC2 :^O |

Gnome is Gtk-based, while Kde is Qt-based. This may help a little (www.linuxquestions.org) What does redhat-config-network say about your connection? Are you sure you have the correct device? Is it a WinModem? |

| 300545 | 2004-12-08 01:12:00 | Might it be a privileges problem? Have a look with tail -20 /var/log/messages just after the error occurs. The whole PPP/modem/etc system has always had problems over "who" should be allowed to connect to the external world. If root is the only one who can do that, it means that the system is exposed with root privilege. It's also considered a security problem if "users" can do it. :D |

| 300547 | 2004-12-08 09:51:00 | I think I know what error 8 is, It means its unable to connect to the internet or unable to detect a dail tone I managed to get it going ie active service on bootup with the modem plugged in and when the network daemon started enabling the moden service, it dialed out / connects to my ISP, if how ever I unplug the modem cable I get an error 8 . I have over come the Gnome fault by making KDE the default desktop for all users, I just love HOWTO's vi /etc/sysconfig/desktop add the lines or edit DESKTOP="KDE" DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE" RE . org/krishnan/tips/tip037 . shtml" target="_blank">fedoranews . org |
