300360 2004-12-07 01:46:00 A friend is running a client- server network [ server and 5 workstations, running server 2003 and XP ] , and asked me recently about using a professional AVG product instead of the Norton product he's currently running . The AVG product is substantially cheaper , and he has heard how AVG is less resource hungry/ intrusive . Any feedback from anyone who's installed/ managed/ used the AVG products in similar settings would be much appreciated .
Thanks in advance for your time :)

300361 2004-12-07 19:23:00 We use avg 6 Pro (Support stops for this product on Dec 30 replaced by AVG 7) for about a two years on our network client machines (approx 400) and have no complaints. I run Avg 7 free on my personal laptop which is just a cut down version of AVG 7 Pro and except for the Email scanner stopping outgoing email ( configuration soon fixed this) everythings fine.
Avg is less resource hungry than Nortons.

Grisoft support is good for paid products, I have email contact with them and have always recieved a prompt, helpful and informative reply.

300362 2004-12-07 19:46:00 I installed AVG Pro in a business (Nortons conflicted with the till software) and it works well. Certainly was less resource hungry.

I quite liked the way it updated over the network, each PC automatically checks the network location for the definition file and installs it every time it boots, if the AV definition has been updated.

300363 2004-12-07 20:09:00 Beama, what have you needed support for? I'm interested in this topic as well, and it seems to me that it is all very well having good support, but if that implies there are a lot of support issues happening, it raises some queries about the product.

BTW, does AVG support Outlook Express? I get the impression that it doesn't.

It does - I have AVG 7 running on a PC using the OE plugin at the mo - all works fine. I also have it on a POP/SMTP proxy scanning everything going through it - again, no problems.

300365 2004-12-07 21:13:00 Are you sure AVG7 has a plug-in for OE? AVG6 did and AVG7 does for Outlook but I thought 7 uses the proxy method for OExpress. PaulD (232)
300366 2004-12-07 21:31:00 That was my impression too.

the support I needed was in relation to a peice of software needed to update avg 6 pro over the network ie the signature file was dowloaded to a network share and the clients connected to the avg admin software on the server share to update (updates were manually downloaded to the share, it had nothing with avg virus scanner it was a query in relation to this admin software on the server) but I believe that avg 7 (I know the free version does) now supports proxy/firewall setups where as avg 6 did not if you had a proxy/firewall on avg 6 you had to use the avg admin software to update (as earlier outlined)
As far as OE is concerned we dont use it at work nor do I use it at home so sorry cant help you there, but it does intigrate well with pegasus mail

This virus scanner it has caused us no trouble on our network and we found it reliable and has detected and stopped many possible infections here
