300239 2004-12-06 23:55:00 Hi,

I have had this recurring problem with my DVD drive, where it would detect in the BIOS as DVD-POM DRIVE 16X IAXUM,M instead of 16X DVD-ROM DRIVE 16X MAXIMUM. It wouldn't work in Windows.

Unplugging and reseating the cable usually solved it. I always thought it was my DVD drive. But then I tried connecting my 52X CD burner, and it went fine for a few days.

But then, in Windows, "Found new hardware: LITE-MN CD-PW SMHP-5218Q"

So, it must be the controller.

What do you think, time to RMA the month-old board?

300240 2004-12-07 00:19:00 Why don't you take it back to your dealer for support? :-) PaulD (232)
300241 2004-12-07 00:25:00 have you tried it on another PC noone (22)
300242 2004-12-07 00:28:00 Paul, I am my own dealer :). It would be taking it back to my supplier, who would swap it.

Yes, the drives work on other PCs. Yes, I have tried numerous other (all brand new) IDE cables.

It must be the IDE controller. I've got it fixed for now, so do I

A) Put up with it
B) Buy an IDE card
C) RMA the board

300243 2004-12-07 00:43:00 I know that you are your own dealer and now I get the impression you would be slow to deal with faulty hardware. PaulD (232)
300244 2004-12-07 00:44:00 Really? How?

How does my personal PC affect my business in anyway? Not even related mate

300245 2004-12-07 00:49:00 I think I see where you were coming from Paul, but if it were a customer's PC I would have just swapped the board with another in stock. Would have taken about an hour all up :). Not that slow is it? george12 (7)
300246 2004-12-07 00:49:00 Try another cable. There might be weak spring contacts in one of the llines. Graham L (2)
300247 2004-12-07 00:49:00 If it's faulty and under warranty, why would you either put up with it or buy a workaround?

PS So you're not claiming your PC as a business expense either.
PaulD (232)
300248 2004-12-07 00:57:00 No, It's not a business PC. I have a business PC too, but I keep this PC for personal use.

> Try another cable

Another brand new cable? After the fourth? Yes, I know it does sound like the cable... I'll try a new one next time it happens.

Paul, I wouldn't buy a workaround, it's just that it doesn't happen very often and when it does just a little reseating of the cable (10 second job) will have it sweet for ages. If it gets worse, I'll swap it for another and RMA it.

Difference for me is, I don't mind the fault too much - but for a customer that's not a consideration.
