300163 2004-12-06 22:23:00 China's largest computer maker, is set to announce as early as this week that it will pay about $1.5bn in cash and shares for IBM's PC business leaving the Chinese group with IBM's famous “Think” brand.

It is understood the talks over a purchase that would make Lenovo the world's third-largest computer maker, and give IBM a share of more than 5 per cent in the Chinese group, are at an advanced stage and an announcement could come this week.

Wonder where IBM went wrong?

???????

The PC as in personall computer market is looking more and more like the place not to be.

This dosent take IBM out of the server marke,t or the heavy industrial business machines, IBM's core, and they end up with a big chunk of the new entity, whats wrong??

Wrong?
US$1,500,000,000 doesn't look very "wrong" perhaps to shareholders...

300166 2004-12-06 23:35:00 Didn't IBM pull out of the desktop market a couple of time before? I vaguely remember an announcement around 1998 that they wanted to concentrate on server back then. Spout (6433)

When I say wrong I mean, they used to quite ubiquitous, they could have done a Dell, you wouldn't bi that for a measly 1.5 bill.

300168 2004-12-06 23:52:00 i think they now focus on businesses who buy huge amounts of pcs and servers , if you look at their pcs you can see this with the small space saving desktops etc noone (22)
