If $$$ are tight why not just buy a motherboard to match your componants? A Gigabyte GA-7NF-RZ will run your DDR RAM and Athlon 1800 CPU. At just over $100 it'll certainly be a cheap way to upgrade..

300671 2004-12-07 23:41:00 I don't think there's any point in moving to 64 bit computing at this point in time.

Windows XP 64 bit edition is scheduled for release in 2005 I think, but even so, not many applications will even make use of 64 bit computing.

300672 2004-12-07 23:50:00 yeah , 64bit is for the future as with pci express and thing about having future tech today , its overated , over priced , and has no current benifit noone (22)

Yea, thats y i thought i'd ask if i should go for 64bit, i mean i have one more year at high shcool, then i'm off to uni, and i don't think i'll be getting any upgrades then! So this will probably be the last M/B upgrade i do for a long time!!

I've gave myself $400 to spend on CPU & Motherboard, so i have decided i will go 64bit
And just looking at the socket 939 or wotever, cheapest CPU is $280, and the cheapest M/b for it is $250, unless i get thsi : ASRock K8 Combo-Z Socket 754/Socket 939 combo, which anyway (its $150) i'm still over my budget.
So i think i'll get one of those above M/Bs (and you reckon stay away from MSI?? And is it really worth the extra $50 for the PRO version?) and the AMD Athlon 64 2800+ 1.8GHz Socket 754 CPU.

Thanks all

300674 2004-12-07 23:55:00 good luck noone (22)
300675 2004-12-07 23:59:00 what sort of graphics card are you getting noone (22)
300676 2004-12-08 00:00:00 Ignore everything about 64-bit capabilities,You should base your desicion on the cpu's 32 bit capabilities, and it just so happens that the 754 pin and 939 pin AMD cpu's kick major arse in 32 bit software (and will run 64-bit software when its available,a bonus for sure but not really something to base a purchase on)

Best bang for your buck,a 754-pin board with whatever cpu fits your budget.

If your going to buy a new mobo its a perfect time to upgrade the cpu as well, saves money in the long run.

As to upgradeabilirty,I recieved this from some AMD lacky the other day.

Socket - Update
AMD have introduced two new sockets into the market in both the Sempron and Athlon product families. To help clarify your motherboard stocking decisions please use the following guidelines for your planning purposes.

Socket A, AMD Sempron™ processors will gradually be transitioned out of the market by Q3 2005 (July - September timeframe)
Additional AMD Sempron™ processors in a variety of speed grades for socket 754 are scheduled to be released in Q1 2005 (January - March timeframe) which will increase the applicability of Socket 754 Motherboards
There will be no new AMD Athlon™ 64 releases for socket 754. The AMD Athlon™ processors 3000+, 3200+, 3400+, 3700+ will remain as the only socket 754 AMD Athlon™ 64 processors
All new releases of AMD Athlon™ 64 processors will be for socket 939 only
So what does this mean for your business? Socket 754 will gradually become the volume motherboard for the value space (for AMD Sempron™ processors) and we expect volume of socket 754 motherboards to increase. This offers you an excellent upgrade sales opportunity to the AMD Athlon™ 64 processors 3000+ to 3700+ which will remain in the 754 socket configuration.

300677 2004-12-08 00:37:00 Thanks guys.

I already have a vid card - Radeon 9600xt

And thanks for all that info Metla.
So yea, as i onloy upgrade CPU about once every 18mnths - and maybe less in the future, i think i'll just go with that.
Thanks all!

300678 2004-12-08 01:17:00 64 bit software is capable of 2^32 times more bugs. :D

Does anyone believe that version 1 of a 64 bit OS will be reliable?
