300287 2004-12-07 02:33:00 That does make sense, but i hope its not true!
One other thing, after i had went to the 'save & exit' it went black, seemed to jam, then came up 5 little icons on teh centre of the screen, they were various colors, one was a bluey/greeny smily face, the rest i can't remeber (may have been like cards - a spade etc)
But i have seen this many times b4, and just reset it as i haved oen many times b4 also!!

But i'll go try wot u sed now, brb

300288 2004-12-07 02:39:00 If your motherboard has on-board VGA, I would suggest plugging the monitor into that...(not the AGP Card). Also if you have a PC Speaker plugged into the motherboard, it will give you a beep code to tell you what the problem is... :-) Marlboro (4607)
300289 2004-12-07 02:58:00 hey, no onboard Video, so cannot try tht, and yip, the mobo speaker is plugged in, just no beeps.

If it it is the BIOS thts dead, would tht stop everything starting up? if so, it can't be that, becuase everything starts working (incl the fan on the chipset) or i am wrong here?

And another thing, it has a removable bios chip, so could i get a replacement??
Are they easy to get?
Thanks

300290 2004-12-07 03:30:00 The only other thing I can think of would me to take the motherboard battery out, and leave it out for a while (maybe 30min?)

Everything else I can think of has already been suggested above....

300291 2004-12-07 03:32:00 Fans are "dumb", that is they will spin no matter how screwed your chips are, as long as power can reach them.

You could rip out the CPU, stick a screwdriver through the chipset and snap the RAM, (:D) and it would not affect the fans.

I would say 85% chance it is BIOS corruption, leaving you three options:

1) Hot-flashing the BIOS

Borrow a BIOS chip from another PC with identical motherboard. It will boot. Make up a flash disk woth your correct BIOS on it. Set in the BIOS, that the BIOS is cached. This is ESSENTIAL. Boot off the disk. Then, with the PC on, swap the chip for your bad one. Flash it. You're done. I would NOT do this without any experience.

2) Take it in

Get someone else who runs a PC shop to fix it for you. He may do (1) for you, or get in another BIOS chip for you

3) New motherboard

Try turning the PC on with the battery out... or the CMOS reset at clear

300293 2004-12-07 04:30:00 The white smiley, black smiley, card suit symbols are what you get when you send 0,1,2 ... bytes to a video display. They are part of the IBM PC character set (en.wikipedia.org).(You'll need to page down a few times to see this character set. You'll see what all this PC computer stuff started with).

A BIOS shouldn't be doing that. ;-)

300294 2004-12-07 04:46:00 To go back to the very beginning. What was prompting you to format and reinstall the OS? Was a prblem occuring that could be related to a dodgy bios? Davesdad (923)
300295 2004-12-07 05:05:00 Ok, thanks guys.
I'll try the thing with the battery, leaving it out and turning it on w/o, i'll let ya no how i get one.

And George, I don't no of anyone with a Chaintech Mobo let alone this model, so i think i'm out of luck with your first option - anyone hear own a Chaintech 7nJL1 m/b??
And i don't really wanna take it in, cos all they'll say is "ya m/b is screwed, that'll be $400 for a new one, and $100 for telling ya this"
As for ya 3rd option, i think that is looking most likely!!
As for the character thingy's, that may have been what came up, i dunno, but i've seen it quite a few times before, after changing a setiing.

And Davesdad, i was wanting to reistall as it was just time to do so, my windows was getting chocka with apps, and you may have seen my other posts where i couldn't use some apps such as Media Player.

How long is the standard warranty on a motherboard? i brought this in June 2003, to long ago?
And as for a new mobo, whats a good one for the above hardware, haven't really been following the latest tech re M/b's, whats the best chipset these days?
Cheers

That suggests to me that this problem has been festering for some time. Have you ever flashed the BIOS, or as mentioned had any other issues, particulalry of a hardware, I/O type?

You might get it back by clearing the CMOS, in some cases it can take some time to do, several hours would be a good place to start.
