300516 2004-12-07 14:06:00 Some weeks ago my jetink printer cartridge packed up, only the top and bottom part of the font got printed, the replacement was about $80, I thought "Stuff that, I will put my money towards a laser printer" I went for the slightly more expensive printer because the toner cartridges were cheaper.

For $356, (depends were you go) I must say I am glad I did, at 20 pages a minute, the pages fly out, the picture quality is better, (better contrast) (black printer) , the pages don't wrinkle on solid black printing, The web site gives the cost on replacement items like, tone cartridges, drum. , the sale brochure tells you how many pages it should print per toner cartridge,

The only bug is when I first put the page back in to the "letter slot" to get printed on the other side the page went in at a angle and the page go creased a bit, so now I put the page back in the draw. and the paper that is sitting in a draw and waiting is not exposed to local dust.

Get a laser for Christmas, if you have been used to jetink you will be glad you did.

300517 2004-12-07 16:17:00 Me Too.
I bought a cheap Laser (Panasonic) last Xmas. I don't do a lot of printing and am still useing the original toner cartridge.
I just got fed up with forever having to replace the ink in the ink jet printer every two or three months.
The funny thing is that my first ink jet (an HP 500) never seemed to run out of ink. I used to replace the cartridges no more than once a year. And in those days ( early 1990's) I was always printing. Full page colour etc.
My last ink jet needed new ink every couple of months for far less printing.

Could it be,since they are now cheaper, they use smaller cartrdges.?

300519 2004-12-07 19:12:00 I am using a HP Laserjet 4, which was the one used by Noah to print up the Dinner menus on his epic voyage, and I have been using it for three years for business printing and am still on the first replacement cartridge.
It cost me $185 when I bought it and the cartridge was $108 inc GST.
I will use it for a mooring for my yacht when it finally dies, but in the meantime it serves me well.

300520 2004-12-07 19:32:00 There is nothing wrong with the LaserJet 4 - it was built during a time when printers were built well and that was an expensive printer in its day. Provided the fuser doesn't need replacing that printer should see you right for some time.

Some all round excellent advice to buy a laser printer - just don't get caught with the Brother laser printers, the drum on the Brother laser printers need replacing every 2nd or 3rd toner refill and can be very expensive to replace (about the same cost as the printer)

300521 2004-12-07 19:38:00 Anyone with any opinions on colour lasers??? somebody (208)
300522 2004-12-07 20:09:00 Never had a colour laser, but they are certainly comming down in price.I suspect that the cheaper ones are not much good.
But look at the toner prices!!!

300523 2004-12-07 21:06:00 I am getting a Brother HL2700cn colour for $844 which is network ready. Some say colour printout on photos is not good and others say it is fine so I would suggest it is much like an inkjet and needs the correct setup to get the best out of it. Anyway I still have my photo inkjet for that but need a quick colour printer that does not chew out the juice after a short time as inkjets do. Big John (551)
300524 2004-12-07 21:10:00 Colour lasers are very good .

As long as you realise that the purchase cost is just the "deposit" .

The real cost comes with the consumables!

Agreed.

The better colour laser printers have the same speed for black and white prints as for colour prints. If you are expecting to do a small volume of colour prints, my opinion is to stay with the inkjet - plus beware that some modern toner cartridges expire after a set period, regardless of how much toner has been used - although you can prise off the chip to use the rest of the toner.
