| 1360978 | 2013-11-27 17:39:00 | Four coat hangers twisted and soldered into a speaker cable were compared to expensive Monster speaker cables, and no one could tell the difference in audio quality. Article here (gizmodo.com), also see here (gizmodo.com)and here (consumerist.com). Harvey Norman sells this crap at $69 (www.harveynorman.co.nz) :horrified for a 1m cable, and Fishpond has Monster cable for :waughh: $499 (www.fishpond.co.nz) There are other brands that are also overpriced rip offs, e. g. "Oxygen Free", gold plated, etc. |

Some years ago before the internet became the default source of information I read a very good article in an audiophile magazine where a sound engineer analysed the effect of gold connectors, oxygen free cable, etc. and compared it to ordinary nickel plated connectors and cheap cables. His conclusion? the net effect is a slight increase in level due to lower loss and that human ears perceived more volume as better quality. Turn the volume up one notch and achieve the same effect for free. There are some arguments for shielding that are valid, but for most people monster cables are a complete waste of money. Speaker wires need to be a heavy enough conductor weight to not introduce too much loss, that's about it. Most of us struggle to hear the difference Bi-wiring gives and that's real (well maybe, I can't hear it myself), the difference in signal between a expensive cable and a cheap one with the same conductor weight is beyond human hearing if it even exists. It's all marketing, even if the cables are better they are not worth what they cost. Same with expensive HDMI cables - total marketing gimmick (ok well to qualify, at 1080P or lower and under 5M. Outside that it does actually matter). |

| 1360985 | 2013-11-27 20:57:00 | But, but it's got a Turbine connector!! Surely that must make my audios sound betterer? :D Not only does it sound better, it is faster due to the extended high frequency response, so when you listen to the news, it is newer news. That's worth an extra $100 right there. ;) |

As Frank Zappa once remarked, why would anyone think the last 1m of cable is going to make any difference: ie the audio goes though alot of cable in the recording studio, the speaker/interconncet is just the last 1% www.audioholics.com These idiots also claim to hear the difference from $100 audio grade fuses(not a joke) , and honestly claim a $500 2M power cable makes a real difference to sound quality: what about the other 20M of power cable inside the wall guy, are you going to upgrade the power cable all the way back to the substation. :-) www.essentialsound.com Monster Audio also made high quality $60++ printer & USB cables . For some reason, Harvey Norman was having trouble getting anyone to buy those :-) |
