1360555 2013-11-21 21:37:00 Hi mods
Can the search function please be fixed. Ive had this sort of thing a few times now. Not sure why some words arnt allowed in searches
It just means I now have to use Google to search PF1

quoteth
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search:
MYOB
1101 (13337)
1360556 2013-11-22 02:11:00 It's not broken, it's configured that way. The minimum length for search terms is currently 5 characters, imo it should be either 4 or 3 though. inphinity (7274)
1360557 2013-11-22 07:32:00 The news is a bit vague on whether the search tool can be fixed, at the moment we can't find an answer R2x1 (4628)
1360558 2013-11-22 10:27:00 As inphinity said - it's a setting, not a problem that needs fixed...

The default is 4 characters, but Fairfax in their desperate need to keep server load at ridiculously low levels, must have set it at 5.

There is probably no reason now it couldn't be reset to 4 or even 3 as inphinity suggests.

It would be up to whoever the site admin is now over the ditch to do it or give the go ahead to Chill or someone to do it.

It's probably using the "Fulltext search engine" rather than v Bulletin's built in one, so it would simply need the
"ft_min_word_len=5"
changed to 4 or 3 in the config file, and then to
"rebuild the search indexes"

done... :)

1360559 2013-11-22 22:06:00 Idiotic for a computer forum, many names\words\acronyms etc may be as little as 2 characters. Agent_24 (57)
1360560 2013-11-22 22:12:00 yes, but but imagine how many results there would be for 2 character searches - that would be a bit too far lol
..and would spike server cpu considerably on execution

1360561 2013-11-22 22:27:00 True but annoying. Say if you want to find a post exclusively about Windows 95 - you can't search for 'Windows 95' since it just drops the 95 and finds everything containing 'Windows'

Even '"Windows 95"' doesn't work, and neither does '*95'

1360562 2013-11-22 22:54:00 actualy - if you search for "Windows 95" enclosed in the quotes, it WILL bring back the desired results

I just tried it to confirm

not using the advanced search, just the basic one on the right of the grey menu bar under the pc world banner .

ALSO - if you search for MYOB as 1101 wanted, this will bring the correct results as well if enclosed - "MYOB"

results : 7 pages with MYOB in the content

Search:

Keyword(s): "MYOB" . . . Page 1 of 7

1360563 2013-11-22 23:25:00 actualy - if you search for "Windows 95" enclosed in the quotes, it WILL bring back the desired results

I just tried it to confirm

Are you sure? Searching 'Windows 95' with or without quotes brings back 20 pages of results for each, which appear to be identical. That should not be correct, surely?

1360564 2013-11-23 01:32:00 Haha - that search engine is doing some crazy $hit :)

it says 20 pages regardless of how many pages there actually are! lol

once you find the last page, it will then realize and display the correct number of page results.... until you do a new search, then it's 20 again! hahaha

however - enclosing in quotes definitely brings better results....

================================================== ==============
search for windows 95 (no quotes)

result = Search:Keyword(s): windows - 13 pages results

but search seems to be confined to only threads started in the last 5 months or so??
and only looks for "windows"
not very helpful results at all

================================================== ===============

search for "windows 95"

result = Search:Keyword(s): "windows 95" - 13 pages results

These results are MUCH better - still 13 pages, but all referencing "windows 95" and results from as far back as September 1998!

some results will be "windows" alone and "95" alone, but most will be "windows 95"

all keywords will be highlighted in the posts

not perfect as far as search engines go, but pretty good results
