1360883 2013-11-27 05:48:00 We were getting some pretty bad rain fail on UHF this week in the burbs of Christchurch, not what I expected at all
most likely lack of signal. bigger aerial or amp is required. UHF dosn't have rain fade. UHF signal goes through rain, satellite signal does not go through rain.,

one problem with digital is picture is either on/off. poor signal still gives good pics but a small drop in signal means you loose the entire picture. good signal gives you more headroom before it cuts out.

1360884 2013-11-27 06:32:00 I didn't realise it rained so often on satellites. Richard (739)
1360885 2013-11-27 06:58:00 Does anyone in CHCH know what is causing UHF Freeview to glitch sometime between 7 & 7:30 every morning in Templeton? I was staying there a couple of weeks ago & was told it happens every morning. Greven (91)
1360886 2013-11-27 07:37:00 How degraded is the UHF? If it's marginal maybe consider a taller aerial mount, a higher gain aerial, or a masthead amp? Also check you are using good coax, some of what's around has high loss at UHF. It may be a hassle but the UHF service is better than satellite in my opininion and worth the effort. More channels and actual HD mainly. Also if you have a duplexer or triplexer installed for using an old school VHF aerial it's time to ditch that, just adds loss and VHF is no use now.

Thanks for that, but all these things have been done. I'm looking ae satellite mainly for recording purposes. I don't watch much myself, but SWMBO finds all the programs she likes mostly overlap and are on late. It gets very frustrating for her to find, quite often the recordings are unwatchable, or gaps plus other effects, some of which we see live as well. I realise that satellite will not have the quality of terrestrial I am just trying to qualtify the differency with some decent gear and find a decent supplier.

1360887 2013-11-27 07:51:00 a good mast and stays are required. seen far to many poorly installed dishes rip boards off homes etc.

I intend to have the dish placed on a concrete pad in a sheltered corner with a clear view.
