1360730 2013-11-24 20:45:00 Have a look at the Geneology Forum on Trademe, you will find some very helpful people there. Pato (2463)
1360731 2013-11-24 22:58:00 Also a NZ site www.nzgdb.co.nz now called famnet.net.nz, for NZ and Aus. Lurking (218)
1360732 2013-11-25 01:36:00 Any of you guys into genealogy? If so, how do you access New Zealand information? Ancestry.com gives me plenty of access to UK and Australian records, but NZ seems to be a bit of a secret squirrel outfit, with what is really public information. Is there some way to get at this info without having to pay for a paper certificate, which I don't really want. All I want is dates and places.

Upped my sub to Ancestry.co.uk last month to the highest value for a year, it's expensive I know but it does give access to the other branches, like Australia/New Zealand.

Have access to the Census for NZ.

www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz this site has given the names of two of my father's brothers who both died young.

A lot of cemeteries are now online and give a lot of detail, the Norsewood one under Tararua Council gave a lot of details too.

But most of my tree came from the free FamilySearch.org website and they have now linked up with Ancestry.com, so no doubt free will be no longer, lol.

PJ, take a look at this site: http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/

This full link: www.thegenealogist.co.uk which you will find never works gave me most details about my Grand Uncle, of whom I have a late 1910 ( Coronation time scale ) photo, wondered why he had large fists, it's because he was a farrier, lol.

www.findmypast.co.uk is a similar site.

I have several paid sites, but we can't give full assistance to others', as it contravenes their rules.

1360737 2013-11-25 23:36:00 Thanks for all the replies peeps. I guess overseas registries don't give BDandM info either. They only let you access an index, to then apply for a certificate. Not really good enough, but all we seem to get. I am making great progress with my family tree regardless, and getting quite caught up in the process. Should have done it years ago, but without the help and research that Ancestry gives you, it would have been damn near impossible. Richard (739)

Prior to Sept 1838 you will have to access the LDS Mormon site. Also look for Parish records. Again with the LDS you can hire film tapes of the original church pages. Also go to the library &view the microfiche for the area you want...then as them to print off all of the relevent section with the surname you want.

I have done tha in 4 instances & it gives you a printed record that you can follow & refer to. PJ

1360739 2013-11-26 04:10:00 Richard - if you have any Forest of Dean ancestry, there is a marvelous voluntary donation forum for descendants that has scads of freely available Parish Records, and people who will look up census records for you. The area covered by the forum includes parish records from Monmouthshire in Wales. PM me if you have any FoD ancestry. I have found a heap of useful information about my FoD and Welsh ancestry there.
