1360466 2013-11-22 07:33:00 Thanks all - yes it is the main city Toyota dealer service centre. They just took it for a spin and could not get it to produce the symptoms. The computer was busy so we were asked to rebook for the following week.

The air filter was just replaced a month or so ago. Re: the sparks yep the car's spec'ed are double platinums cannot regap those right, not that we have the tool.

This 1998 Camry doesn't have a OBD2 connector, look for it under the dash, behind the coin holder and in the engine compartment where the "diagnostic" box is. I did jumper E1 with TE1 and the O/D OFF button, seat belt and engine check lights blink non-stop. I'm going to search around if this is a known response.

1360467 2013-11-22 08:15:00 Do you know if it's been run with a K&N Air filter?

If it has it might be a problem with the MAF (Mass Airflow sensor)

Over time any excess oil from the filter coats the Sensor which is a fine wire that resembles a Hair

1360468 2013-11-22 09:00:00 It's a Ryco air filter. Hey 1998 Camry .. Nomad (952)
1360469 2013-11-22 17:17:00 Well my other car is a Maxima which I have done over 240,000km (had since 1999)

Not long from getting it installed a K&N Panel Filter,a few years down the track had a problem with erratic running with all sorts of things happening, turns out the oil from the Filter coats the trailing edge of the wire with a film of oil and gives the computer misleading readings

Was traced to a faulty MAF Sensor which I was told had to be replaced at mega bucks

Ended up buying a can of CRC MAF cleaner, taking off and cleaning with the help of a Youtube vid and have had no trouble since

MAF Sensors can go bad over time anyway, just be aware that a franchise will want to sell you a new one at mega bucks when it can be cleaned and may fix the problem

1360471 2013-11-23 07:28:00 New sparks seems to do the trick, vibrations no more now.
Those who are familiar with Wellington, if the vehicle has 96kW and 196Nm - if you were just driving up Ngauranga Gorge at your usual 70 or 80Km/hr and as it gets steeper should it be difficult to maintain 80km/hr or get it faster than 80km/hr? They've had this Camry from 2007, while they just use it getting from A to B. They've always had that issue, occasionally when we drove to Auckland on the highway overtaking it lacks power too. On the flats you can get to 100km/hr no problem but if you wanted a quick overtake it struggled. Is this what to expect from something with 96kW and 196Nm?
