1375406 2014-05-21 08:05:00 I guys.
I have been given a netbook, cause I sure wouldn't buy one....
It have windows 7 starter has had a lot of problems, mainly with starting.
Well wouldn't start at all, again, I'd had a guts full so am installing Linux.
It's a 1.6 GB system with 1 GB ram.
I asked about increasing to 2 GB ram and told was not worth it.
Them said you have to remove the mother board and wanted about $140 for it.
Any ideas on what a good Linux would be? Idiot proof if possible
I've tried it before and always got stuck setting up the wifi.
Thanks,
Ian

1375407 2014-05-21 08:17:00 Win7 starter doesnt have much in it. I wouldnt use that version anyway. Mint maybe OK. or puppy linux. which is small from what I've read. The netbook probably doesnt have a dvd or cd. So you may have to use a flash drive to install Linux

Last time I ran Mint as a live cd it picked up the wireless automatically on this netbook. Didnt have to do anything. So I dont think it'd have changed if I installed it

1375408 2014-05-21 08:36:00 I have unetbootin-windows-603 which makes flash drives bootable.
No, dvd or cd, which is a bit of a pain.
I've tried Mint and it said it had hardware issues and wouldn't load, so looking for something that does.
I'll check out puppy linux.
Thanks

1375409 2014-05-21 08:37:00 Did you do a clean install of Mint?? Boot from the flash drive? What netbook is it?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1375410 2014-05-21 08:49:00 Win 7 starter is fine so long as you except its been stripped back but atually apart from not allowing the background to be changed natively you can't tell the difference between starter and home pre, I use both at home.

Definately Puppy or if you can find it Damn small linux

1375411 2014-05-21 09:11:00 Actually going to 2GB with Starter makes a big difference, we've done it for a number of clients and they all are very happy with new speed.
Unfortunately that is as high as you can go.

I don't think it's worth spending so much on it.
I think that Linux is worth a start and if that don't work???
