2004-12-09 10:24:00 | Should i even bother to utter that word to you people as the way it is heading we might not see it in our lifetime. Heard there were some Leaked beta copies around , anyone had a look at it. With the way they are cutting out features all the time by the time it comes out it will just be xp with a new gui. | noone (22) | |
2004-12-09 10:27:00 | XP + Bloat + Slightly modified GUI = Current state of Longhorn Yes, you heard wrong. There are no leaked Beta copies out. Alpha yes, but thats because there _are_ on beta copies. 4056 PDC Alpha was the latest I heard of. Minimum sys requirements will be an 800Mhz + 256mb Ram + 16MB Agp card + 4GB HDD

2004-12-09 11:02:00 | God, what will be the specs it needs to actually work _decently_ :D | george12 (7) | |
2004-12-09 11:08:00 | Yeah, that dropping features bit sucks. The only bit I was really interested in, the WinFS file system, looks like it's had the cut. The rest is just updates and eye candy by the sounds. Not much point getting it when it finally gets released, really. Unless someone can convince me otherwise. | Catweazle (2535) | |
2004-12-09 11:11:00 | Bugger. I guess that makes the ideal requirements astronomically expensive. :_| | agent (30) | |
2004-12-09 11:15:00 | But even the *ideal* requirements would be far from providing any kind of speed, or stability! For that you need linux.

2004-12-09 12:56:00 | You will probably need Longhorn if you want your new, dual core CPUs to work too. Isn't TCPA scheduled in with the release of Longhorn as well?

My WIndows XP PC is both fast and reliable. But that's because I carefully chose parts that would work together and installed all the latest drivers and patches. This whole Linux thing is a bit exaggerated! The only reason Windows appears to have more security flaws is that it has become a target with so many people hating Gates and Microsoft. Because Linux has no central entity that level of hate/jelousy doesn't exist. I read somewhere that if you had an infinite number of monkeys writing for an infinite time the would eventually write the work of Shakespeare, isn't that really why there are so many attacks on Windows? IMHO Linux more than likely has similar issues to any other OS, it's just not as much fun to attack it. Let's face it, while :inux may be stable and fun for enthusiasts, it's still not a viable replacement for Windows for the masses. Even if Longhorn needs a 2gig CPU and 512mb RAM and a 40gb HDD so what? A system like that will still be less than a third of what I paid for a P120 to run Win95. |
