301078 2004-12-08 07:35:00 My fan ramdomly goes crazy and goes really loud, this is all random, I could be just on the net and it would randomly go crazy, same for when I play games. I thought it would go away so I just left it, then after a few minutes my pc just shut down and then beeps once. So every time the fan goes crazy I have to reboot manualy to avoid a crash which is very anoying. I opend up the case and cleaned off some dust, the dust was REALLY thick on the fan blades over the CPU, The fans didn't goe crazy after I cleaned the fans but now its its going crazy again.

Heres some stats I got from BIOS

SYSTEM Fan Speed: 0 RPM
CPU Fan Speed: 6250 RPM
SYSTEM Temperature 26º
CPU Temperature 38º

I got 3 fans, 1 in Power suply, 1 in Case, and 1 over CPU.

PLZ help, thank you.

301079 2004-12-08 07:43:00 it depends on what u mean by crazy.

i would check what speed the fan is doing when "crazy" and when its not. at a guess the bearing is getting stuffed and going noisy.

is the fan varible speed at all ?

also make sure it is the cpu fan not one of the others.

301080 2004-12-08 08:04:00 get a new fan - look like this one is craped out , if it crashed the pc something must be wrong noone (22)
301081 2004-12-08 23:28:00 Sounds like it could be one of those 'smart' fans that adjust the rotational speed according to the thermal probe readings. If you can't disable the thermal probe, it would be best to get a new fan. I take it that you are talking about the CPU fan making the noise, not a case fan - thus I won't recommend using one of those Zalman resistor cables.

This random loudness would also seem to occur when the CPU is pushed to 100% usage, such as when playing games or using poorly-written software that uses 'busy-waiting' loops instead of being event-driven. When the CPU goes to 100% the temperature rises by a number of degrees, thus triggering a higher rotational speed and hence a louder noise.

Hope this helps.

301082 2004-12-08 23:36:00 Noo, I did a 20min render with max with 100% CPU usage, the fan didn't go crazy, I think its completely random, how do you know its the CPU fan thats the problem? JimboJones (1680)
301083 2004-12-08 23:49:00 Listen to them. If it's not obvious which one it is, take the case cover off when it's doing it's thing, get something non-cunductive like a clean dry finger or the blunt end of a pencil and stop the fan blades from rotating for a second or two to establish which of the fans throwing a fit.

Some PSU's have two fans, front and back, if yours is one of these make sure you check both.

301085 2004-12-12 03:19:00 I've identified the fan, its the case fan. I think all it needs is oil, because when I press the fan inwards it goes quiet then as it spins, it goes loud again. JimboJones (1680)
301086 2004-12-12 03:23:00 oil should help then noone (22)
