301427 2004-12-10 05:23:00 A few very good posts there Murray P :-)

Metla has raised a few good points too I think.....

dwnz2003:
I totally agree, however you have to ask yourself what its doing with that sorta processing power, and why it needs it?

Sure if the whole thing was nice and 3D then I could buy that, but otherwise thats just crazy! Right now Longhorn simply looks like XP with WindowsBlinds on top!

Metla is right too - Shops are selling XP and the machine is in no shape to go online, yet they do it anyways!
You'd think with WinXP SP2 being released that they would start bundling them with SP2 or slipstreaming it but they dont! Hell most Ive seen are still lacking SP1!

I dont know about you guys, but who's used: http://www.arklinux.org
I put a 9 year old in front of a PC to set it up with Ark Linux, he put in the CD, completed the installation 10 minutes!

...Geeks only.... Bah!

Nothing "Wrong" but ther's a nice and a nasty way of doing it.

M/S and Chipzilla could be an awufl lot nicer about this.

Auto companies try to make cars with new tech people want to buy.

They learnt a long time ago they cant force the consumer unless they have a cartell.

The auto cartells are all broken at the moment.

M/S and Chipzilla are using force, because they can, at the moment..

That's what's wrong. Not the release of a new tech, which incedentlay AMD released first.

301429 2004-12-10 05:45:00 Aww gee Chill :8} don't be saying that, I'll get ideas above my station .

The obsolescence of machines that are perfectly capable of carrying out the functions for the vast majority of users is a crying shame .

I guess it makes the commerce wheels go round and round but for Word, the odd spread sheet, email and browsing the net the latest machinery is unnecessary let alone whatever we will be using in 2006 . Games, video and graphics are different but that's a completely different kettle of fish that in most cases doesn't need all the gee gaws in an OS anyway . In fact for a fast gaming machine you only really want what will run the games at optimum .

One thing I missed above, some of the AV and realtime scanning programmes can use a big chunk of grunt by themselves (think Nortons here) so if you want to stay safe but not be bogged down you need reasonable spec's .

301430 2004-12-10 05:57:00 Chill:

Thinking about it, you are kinda right. Why do we need that much power, it is nice but for people only wanting to do basic tasks (eg webbrowsing) will have way to much power, celeron's today probably do but yea.

OT Slightly:

I just found a copy of mandrake 9.2 that i have never used, so i installed it on my spare laptop hdd, and well im not 100% sure. I downloaded firefox, and that went fine, and i setup evolution. I still prefer XP any day.

oh but thats the OEM version which you can only buy with a new pc, if you wanna upgrade/or just buy a version of xp it is like 750 for win xp pro, but the upgrade is like 200

301432 2004-12-10 06:12:00 Daniel,

9.2 is getting there 10.1 is a little closer.

They are definatly closing the gap.

Part of the argument is that we should be able to choose.

M/S and Chipzilla are trying to remove the simple of choice.

IE trying to create a set of machines that all the older O/S can not use, and only a few of the current other O/S can use, they are riding Wright along the restrictive trade practice lines again.

This will lead to more patent Scraps, more anti trust cases ect ect, it is all unnessecary, all because of the controll freak business model of in particular M/S.

301433 2004-12-10 06:53:00 Im using 9.2 because i bought it from DSE before 10 was released. Cant be bothered spending another $9 though, and i dont want to download it. (But if someone sent me the disc/s i would upgrade to it)
