40 GIGS for a operating system !!!

301396 2004-12-09 20:29:00 See thats the whole security through obscurity motto you're singing, but thats not really true.

How do you "carefully choose parts that'll work together" can I ask?

Linux is more secure from the ground up, simply because user has permissions to modify what would be the windows equivilent of c:\documents and settings\username (And the user CANT modify anything else).

I'll give you my IP address.... If you can hack me, you're a bloody legend!

301397 2004-12-09 20:35:00 do we have to hack you via the net or can we just come round to your house and beat you up ( after you have logged on ), then be in your system and be considered a bloodly legend noone (22)
301398 2004-12-09 20:36:00 Give us the IP Chilly.

Then while your watching your comp for signs of activity I'll shoot up to Auckland ,scout out your house, and turn the power off at the fuse box.

You will be pwned.

I could say the same about my Windows XP PC

Windows can be set up like that too.

> How do you "carefully choose parts that'll work together" can I ask?

Certainly you can.

The continual finger-pointing by Linux enthusiasts at Windows users is very tiresome, and not at all new. It was the same for Commodore 64 v Spectrum, Atari ST v Amiga, DOS v Warp. PC v Mac, Holden v Ford.... (hold on, they're not computers)! The eventual winner in each case had nothing to do with being best, it was to do with getting biggest, fastest! The consumer wants choice, the supplier wants a bigger user base which in turn increases choice, which in turn intices more suppliers..... ad finitum.

Linux will always have a smaller user base simply because it's of the geek, for the geek, by the geek. Ease of use or user friendly is the last consideration. Linux can't even keep pace with new hardware releases, simply because the user base is so small that it's not a priority for manufacturers.

Having used Windows and Mac OS9 & OSX and Linux, Linux would be my last choice in a maninstream enviroment.

Of course, hacking becomes harder when your computer is behind a router...

Hey Spout - you are spouting (just a little) here. All I can say is re-read this post in about 5-10 years and see how it stands. Linux is currently making huge steps forward - I predict that (barring silly software patent laws) MS will be in for a rough ride.

For the geek?? I replaced a WinME system for my sister (who is a raw beginner) with SuSE9.1 Desktop version and she is has happy as Larry - using scanner, digital camera, surfing the net, OPen Office, etc. She is definitely not a geek!

301402 2004-12-09 22:06:00 Its named "Longhorn"

So it has: cloven hooves, a tail, and comes from a hot place also?

or perhaps long is the growing waiting period, and horn is an acrynim for some M/S goobbldygook?

Either way buy the time it arrives i shall have died of old age, or mastered linux, and have no need of any doze apart from ensuring as much compatability as possible for my system, to make life easy for all the M/S VICTIMS I asssociate with.

I've been hearing that for the last 5 years ;)

_You_ replaced the OS? Not your sister? Installing Windows (newer than 98) or modern Linux distros is very easy with bootable CDs. but I wonder how she would have got on with the hardware installations if she didn't have you around to do it for her.

A few years ago an aquaintance , who was comfortable with Windows because she had a network of firends who all used Windows, won an iMac. She was very excited about it, especially when she heard that it was a superior system to Windows (her words). She lasted about a week before she realised that none of here friends could help or advise her with it, she swapped it for a second hand PC. Linux falls into the same catagory, if it's not maistream then Joe Average doesn't want it. If you're happy to roll your sleeves up, or know someone who is for free, then try Linux. If you want to be able to ask a mate at work or down the pub for help, or chat about ordinary home computing then you have no option but to stay mainstream. Longhorn will be taken up by the vast majority of us simply because it's the simplist option. Years ago I eventually bit the bullet and moved to PCs, not because I wanted to or because they were better, but because I wanted _choice_!

As an interesting aside, when I see a thread about Linux here, I ignore it - I'm not interested. Why are Linux advocates so attracted to a thread about Longhorn?

301404 2004-12-10 00:17:00 i honestly cannot see what the problem is with windows, really i cant, all you need is a virus scanner and a firewall and you are _mostly_ protected, come to think of it i have never gotten a virus while surfing the net without a firewall . Yes i have just previously installed a linux distro and i am enjoying it, it is completely different but it is time to learn/get used it. I only installed Yoper because i wanted to see what linux can do and see what all the fuss is about:)
Im not at the stage that i will completely wipe off xp (already have several times, accidently of course:P) and turn to linux, im quite happy with windows xp, maybe microsoft can add a few more changes (tabbed browsing) and it will be better.
