301104 2004-12-09 00:36:00 My girlfriends XP Pro PC won't connect to the Internet. The Modem will dial but straight after that I will get an "error 678" with Xtra which was working the day before. I also have my friends Paradise account on it, which would also give an error along the lines of "remote computer failed to respond" these connections have worked for at least a year. Her anti virus subscription ran out 2 weeks ago, I thought I would check a few things 1st. I will scan for viruses (connected to my PC today), I am interest in what step to take to isolate the problem for experiences sake.
1st I checked the phone port & cable= fine
2nd queried the modem= fine
3rd checked dial up settings & created a new connection= no joy
4th removed modem driver & reinstalled - although wonder if this was nessessary given that the modem responded to it being queried.
5th reset the TCP/IP stack as you cant reinstall TCP/IP in XP= no joy.
The only thing I can think of is trying another modem.
A tech from a PC shop told my this is a very common prob & to verify nothing else is using the port - it isn't. He then said it will be a virus that your virus scanner may not pick up.
Does anyone know anything about this or if my antivirus SW doesn't pick it up where this "virus" would be located or where it is loading from.
Any help would be appreciated as I don't really want to rebuild her PC.

301105 2004-12-09 00:44:00 Do you get the handshake sound at all or does it cut out with the error before then? If no handshake, get Telecom to test the line (noticed any street works?). Try alternative dialup number, sorry don't know it off the top of my head but Xtra or Telecom should have it listed. Murray P (44)
301106 2004-12-09 00:46:00 Well the remote computer failed to respond error is normal. I've had this error before with Ihug's dialup. Thats usually the ISP's prob, not yours.

BUT a few tries later, I can log on.

Are you sure, u have the right dialup numbers in the dialup??

Try turning off system restore then do a scan (even tho the AV might not be up to date). It might pick something up if system restore is off. Or try scanning in safe mode....Turn system restore back on later.

301108 2004-12-09 01:02:00 Are you dialling the right number?

Is the phone cable plugged into the LINE socket on the modem, not the phone socket? The phone socket will either have PHONE or a picture of a handset next to it, don't plug it into that.

Do you have to dial a number for an outside line?

Are you disabling call waiting or anything like that unnecesarily?

Is the modem trying to dial international area codes?

Tried the modem cable on a phone to see if the cables shot?

It definitely doesn't need a reinstall to fix, and the fixes you've tried so far mostly won't affect it.

301109 2004-12-09 01:08:00 Is there anything new pluged into the computer?

Try using ps2 key board and mouse, unplug printer etc. to see if that makes a difference.

301110 2004-12-09 01:28:00 Hi all, I'm pretty so the error occurs B4 handshaking with Xtra so I tried paradise to try & rule out ISP prob. Hi Ninja, I've tried/tested all of those - with no joy. Rob99 - nothing new been added. I give it a bloody good scan!! quackle (2097)
301111 2004-12-09 01:51:00 Can you hear the modem actually dialling either through the speaker or by picking up a phone? PaulD (232)
301112 2004-12-09 02:04:00 Good point - If the error appears before hearing any handshaking then the modem must be trying to dial an incorrect number or dialing it incorrectly.
Have you checked that tone is selected and not pulse in Phone andModems/Dialing rules/Edit

301113 2004-12-09 02:11:00 Just something else to try . I've been caught with it a few times lately.
Open IE /tools/ internet options /connections. Make sure that "never dial a connection" is not chosen. The dot should be in "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"

For some reason of it's own it has been shifting itself on my comp.
