2004-12-10 02:21:00 | For those who are using Xandros - version 3 has been released, and I am downloading it at the moment (well, moment is not quite the correct term; it will probably take all day). Here is the url to tell you what has been done since version 2: Xandros Version 3 (www.xandros.com) There are reduced prices ("Early Bird Specials") from $US59.95 for upgrade from v2 Deluxe to v3 Deluxe. Higher prices for Standard versions. John

2004-12-10 02:22:00 | is this the best linux distro for linux newbies - ot should i try something else | noone (22) | |
2004-12-10 02:43:00 | I am not a Linux expert noone, but I have found Xandros the easiest of the three distros I have tried - Mandrake and Fedora were the others . It was certainly the easiest to install and configure, and it is designed for people who are shifting over from Windoze, so it seems very familiar . In the Deluxe edition you get CrossOver Office, which enables you to run Windoze applications like Word (should you need to, that is) . Others on this forum may like to suggest a different distro for a Linux newbie .

2004-12-10 03:02:00 | I think the answer to this question depends what your reason is for approaching GNU/Linux; if you're only interested in getting work done i.e. "computer as a tool" then by all means Xandros is one of the best. On the other hand if your reason for wanting to try GNU/Linux is due to 'curiosity'/'interest in computers' then I would most certainly not recommend any of the common *newbie* distributions. Instead I'd recommend Gentoo, Debian or (I say hopefully...) a BSD like FreeBSD.

2004-12-10 05:29:00 | I would suggest any of the three depending on your level of experience: Ark Linux <-- Total n00bs Yoper Linux <-- Those who have a little experience, or want to get into Linux a little further Gentoo Linux <-- For Power Users, or those interested in the inner workings of Linux, or those who simply want a desktop that rocks!
