| 301528 | 2004-12-09 23:00:00 | I have problems with the fact that the icons on my desktop will not launch the programs anymore. I think it may be the auto repair function that is disabled because I was so stupid to delete Windows Installer recently. Now if I try to do a reinstall from the original XP disk it tells me that there is a newer version of XP installed. can that be the SP-2 and should I reinstall XP2 instead? Are there easier ways? cheers Johan |

Right click > Properties > Shortcut tab > Target field where you ensure or redo the path to the target .exe file or, delete the shortcuts and create new ones from the appropriate .exe. Un-install the app's then reinstall them, not windows. If the obove doesn't fix it and you have windows installations problems: There are articles in the MS Knowledge base on repairing, upgrading and zapping the Windows Installer( MSI). Programmes I have used with success are msicuu2.exe msizap.exe and InstMsiW.exe, all are avialable for download from MS. Check that they are ok for XP, I used them in win2k, follow the MS KB articles, theres a bit of fiddling involved. |

I think that windows auto repair would have taken of it, had I not deleted windows installer recently. As i understand from the MS site it is quite an essential file in that it handles the auto-repair function. cheers, Johan |
