301475 2004-12-09 21:55:00 Hi,

I have a system (XP1800+ 256 Ram XP Home) that wont POST. It will POST and boot fine 40% of the time and runs fine when it does boot. Other 60% it wont even get to the POST screen. I get the 1st beep then the floppy runs (Boot sequence is IDE-0, CD, Disabled so floppy shouldnt even be looked at for boot - not sure how this effects the POST) then repeats. Just that - beep, floppy searching, pause then beep, floppy runs... No POST screen nothing.

I have replaced the RAM, Video card (form card to OB video - but card works fine in another system).

Any ideas would be greatfully recieved.

301476 2004-12-09 22:10:00 Youve taken the floppy out of the boot sequence, have you killed it all through the rest of the BIOS.

Sounds like it cant allways make up its mind how to boot and what errors to halt on.

301477 2004-12-09 22:10:00 is this an ECS mobo ? drcspy (146)
301478 2004-12-09 22:53:00 No the MOBO is a Gigabyte GA7ZMM Porky71 (6522)
301479 2004-12-09 22:55:00 I have replaced the floppy with a new drive so isnt a faulty floppy drive either. Not sure where else in BIOS it is. But shouldnt it still POST. I though POST was pre BIOS settings? Porky71 (6522)
301480 2004-12-09 23:06:00 Could be your PSU; what is its voltage? Caesius (3758)
301481 2004-12-09 23:10:00 300w - Will throw in a new one and see. Thanks for the idea. Porky71 (6522)

I took your statment "then the floppy runs" to mean it had got to that stage before it stopped its boot sequence.

Normally if the floppy runs/attempts to run, post is complete.

If it wont complete its post erratically one of the H/W items has an intermittent fault, the most difficult to trace.

301483 2004-12-09 23:22:00 I have just replaced the PSU and no change.

drb1 - I have noticed that as soon as you hit the power button if the floppy light appears then its a no go, but if the floppy light stay off then it will POST and Boot fine. It is happening as soon as power is applied. Monitor is still blank (No POST screen) and the system has not done anything. I am wondering if flashing the BIOS would help (not sure if newer BIOS is available yet though)??

Just seems strange that it is happening as soon as the power switch is turned on.

Would clearing the CMOS help i wonder?

301484 2004-12-09 23:38:00 disconnect unnecessary hardware........floppy/cdrom/modem whatever.....then try to boot.........if it works .......start adding them in one at a time............also .....take a look at the mobo....do you see all the little cylindrical thingys ?.....they're capacitors.....if ANY are bulging and not flat on the top and nicely cylindrical on the sides then they will most likely be causeing your problems.......I've seen intermittant post/boot happen before with failing caps........ drcspy (146)
