So how many CDs does that bring it down to?

Oh, if you are referring to the ... [a]t .. etc, then that was just me doing that now, as I doubt you would like your email address posted for bots to crawl over.

Hello Chill. I am getting curious about Linux. When you have assessed the new Xandros, pse say how it sits against Ark.

From the looks of it, I'd still rather Ark Linux.

Enjoy!

301564 2004-12-13 19:56:00 Hi Chill

Given my positive experience with Xandros, can you say why you still prefer Ark? I haven't seen Ark, so have no idea about its advantages.

The two reviews you linked are generally positive - I agree that Firefox should be the default browser, but it was a matter of minutes to uninstall the Mozilla Internet Suite and install Firefox, which was on Xandros Networks and the installation disk. My experience with wireless with v3.0 differed from the reviewers' experiences - my Intel 2100 wireless card in the Fujitsu laptop (which would not work under v2.5) was detected and it works fine. I haven't tried the VPN wizard yet - will do so later today. Incidentally, I linked my Treo 600 to my laptop, and was able to synchronise my address book to the KDE Mail client (Ximian Evolution cannot sync addresses yet which is a pity because I prefer it to KDE Mail).

I thought the reviews were very positive, so was wondering why you still prefer Ark to Xandros?

Thanks
John

301565 2004-12-13 21:08:00 Just to hijack this thread slightly, Chill, is it possible to get Ark Linux as a bootable live-cd which doesn't require installing? somebody (208)
301566 2004-12-14 02:21:00 Nope, Ark Linux is an Install-Only distro.
You really only need the first CD, but CD 2 has lots of extra software (Hence being called "Extra-Software Disc 2") and is highly recommended.

The 3rd Disc is Server-Software, great for apache, ftp-daemons etc

The 4th Disc is the Development Tools, like gcc etc

Im only able to compare to Xandros-2.0 Standard/deluxe/OCE (Ive installed the lot and used OCE for a few weeks).

I found it to be a very "basic" install. Not much... Call me crazy but I want everything included.
Ark Linux sticks to KDE just like Xandros, and therefore doesnt have Gaim and Firefox, but they're in the online repositries also.

I'd be happy to make you a copy of the disc's if you'd be kind enough to give us a review John?

Send me an email if you're keen :-) Chilling_Silence [at] Orcon [dot] net [dot] nz

Otherwise I'd be happy to throw a quick review in here.

Bearing in mind I'd be sending you the Dockyard 20041129 CD's which arent labelled 'stable' but still rock! :-)

Cheers
