301843 2004-12-11 03:58:00 Hi all, just a quick question, pretty self explanatory from the subject...
Im buying my partner a couple of games for Xmas, i usually get the Games on cd, however, now we have dvd writer.

The guy at the shop told me they have a "SE"(Special Ed.) on DVD only, of one of the games, "MOH - Pacific Assault", so i thought i may as well get that one, as he said he will do it for the same as the cd price :).

I just wondered what is the difference - really??... okay, its an "S.E", however i mean whats the advantages of buying games on DVD instead of Cd?
Is it just the better quality graphics dvd provide etc...?
I don't do alot with dvds as yet, as you can see, as we have only just really got the dvdwriter.

I am mainly just curious how i would see any difference between using a cd or dvd for games?

Cheers :)

301844 2004-12-11 04:10:00 I imagine having a game on DVD instead of CD, means you no longer have to change CD's during the game when prompted, as the DVD can hold the complete game. :) Jen C (20)
301845 2004-12-11 04:21:00 yeah thats really the main advantage, there is no improvement in graphics quality or anything, just the exact same game stuck on one disk rather than like 5. lagbort (5041)
301846 2004-12-11 06:14:00 some people have had problems with their games being on dvd, i think there was a thread here somewhere where someone had a problem with a dvd version of the Sims 2 Prescott (11)
301847 2004-12-11 06:59:00 Having a game on DVD only has advantages when installing the game as you don't have to swap discs. One disadvantage is that the game is on one disc and if that disc gets damaged you're stuffed. With games on multiple CD's you should be able to play with any of the discs in your CD drive. As long as you are careful with the discs DVD is fine. Sb0h (3744)
301848 2004-12-11 08:11:00 Thank you all for the feedback, i thought as much, as you all say, apart from fitting the game on one Dvd, there is no diff at all . O . k, i theorised, that DVD {Digital Video Disc and now apparently known under the new term of: Digital Versatile Disk (CD, MPEG, DVD) } are still just a disc with the "same" files/Game on .

Thanks Prescott - I had also wondered if there were any known issues/probs that had arisen with people using dvd games rather than cd?

I "would" like to get the dvd, as apparently there are some nice extras on it, which i think my partner may appreciate ;-) .

Sb0h - Appreciate your comments too, as i usually like to add the no cd patches]:), so i can put the original discs away safely from damage;-), as well as it saves wear and tear on the cd drive, as they do tend to get a thrashing ;-) . However as you say, it will mean having to use the one install/play DVD constantly :O, I am worried enough that my other half will keep forgetting its a dvd and try putting it in the cd drive out of habit, lol .

Cheers :-)
