302376 2004-12-12 10:48:00 Compatibility, burning formats IIRC from the reviews I read before buying mine.

Here's a review from CDRinfo (www.cdrinfo.com) and some more reviews at CDFreaks (www.cdfreaks.com) although they haven't done a NEC ND 3500 review yet it's a good site for info. Another review from CDRLabs (www.cdrlabs.com).

Don't base your choice just on these reviews though, your purchase decisions may be quiet different to mine.. Check out a few drives that are within your range, and compare.

Here, Mid year or later for the first expensive ones, Probably too long, and then you also have to wait for the media price to become realistic, probably = 2006

Allways good to check above, read all specs CAREFULLY.

Compare write speeds on different models in different formats, some that seem to do everything dont when you look closely, or the performance falls through the floor, in certain formats.

this can make somethig cheap really a non performer.

Also check what media it will work with well .

There have been threads here about dvd/rw not working with certain media brands, genrally the lower end of the market has a little more problem in this area.

302385 2004-12-13 08:19:00 DVD burners are still well in an infinite stage, and the quality differs greatly between the brands you can buy . The DVD manufactures are constantly releasing new firmware’s to tell the DVD unit how to write to the DVD media .

Lets say compare this to CD writers . Pretty much any CD writer straight out of the box unit will pretty much write to any media of any quality . The only distinguishing feature now is how the units can handle the various copy protections used by the Music and game industries . DVDs writers are very much different .

At the moment there are a few brands out there, but very view of any recommendable quality .

Recent Pioneer and Asus drives are exactly the same drive just a different badge on the front . Summary of the drives would be great build quality, great quality writers to all media quality types . Recommend? Yes . Pioneer 108D

Recent BenQ and Phillips drives are exactly the same drive just a different badge on the front . Summary of the drives would be that the BenQ1620 is a quality built drive with Lots of after market software treats to test write quality Bit setting etc recommend? Yes . Flagship drive BenQ 1620

NEC . Good drive for writing to any media quality type either ± R . NEC though are pretty slow to release new firmwares . Lots of after market firmwares though fill this void . Recommend? Yes . Flagship drive NEC 3500

Recent Lite-on and Sony drives are exactly the same drive just a different badge on the front . The drives would be consided to be noisier then other brands, would prefer to write to HQ +R media only . Lots of after market software treats to test write quality, Bit setting etc Recommend? No
