301859 2004-12-11 02:06:00 I have been trying to teach myself HTML and have made my first web page. However when it is uploaded any images (photos) just come out as a square with a cross in it. My first page is at uk.geocities.com merlebill (6529)
301860 2004-12-11 02:24:00 Merlebill,
welcome. did you upload the file containing your image(s)?
As well as the html file you need to upload the file which contains your image or else the link on the page can't find it.
Cheers,
Rob

301861 2004-12-11 02:26:00 Hello merlebill

Welcome to Press F1 :)

You need to make sure that you have uploaded this image: uk.geocities.com

Is that photo uploaded?

It 404's and the image doesn't display so it's pretty safe to assume it's not.

You need to makle sure your filenames are exactly as they are in the code as well - missing capital letters etc can cause this on a lot of servers.

I'd also suggest modifying or removing your e-mail address. It's a very quick way of having it crawled by spam bots.

301863 2004-12-11 02:54:00 ninja is onto it, the photo is there but with an extension of JPG, but the code has an extention of jpg.

It's case sensitive. Make them both the same case.

301864 2004-12-11 08:12:00 Thanks for your replies. I am pretty sure I loaded the photos correctly but will go back and recheck. When I wrote the page I did it in Windows Notepad and the tested it in My Documents while offline and every thing looked good. I then uploaded it and got the squares and crosses. Got some other advice that I will act on concerning content that I will act on. Many thanks.

Kudos for using Notepad - how real men make web-sites.

You'll find Windows doesn't really care about the case of a filename, where as *nix is a bit more fussy, hence it working fine when you tested it, but not when you uploaded it.

Geocities will undoubtedly be running in a *nix environment which will see the capitilisation discrepancy and not load the file.

Seems to be sorted now though.
