303162 2004-12-15 23:48:00 I have a minor problem. My PC has a Gigabyte motherboard with onboard sound (Realtek AC97), and is one of those "smart" ones which try to detect what you're plugging in.

The problem is yesterday it suddenly stopped working - it was working, then I logged off, went away for a while, came back and it wouldn't go.

I have tried re-installing the drivers, switching the plugs around (and it always detects my speakers as "line in"), disabling the jack-sense and plugging in the speakers as per normal plug arrangements (green for speakers), and nothing works. I have also tried with a pair of headphones, and that also doesn't work. I have tested both the speakers and headphones on another PC and they are working fine.

Any ideas? Is it likely to be a hardware failure?

303163 2004-12-16 00:10:00 It hasn't perhaps been changed in this bios accidentally? And the volume is set high enough? Ash M (46)
303164 2004-12-16 00:27:00 Also, what Windows are you running?
It hasn't somehow set itself up for 4 speaker Dolby has it, as this changes the designations of the audio sockets.

303165 2004-12-16 00:46:00 Unsure about that "auto-detect" thing but when the drivers were reinstalled did you setup the speaker config appropriately? (as pheonix is pointing to)

Check Windows sound setup too...

303166 2004-12-16 00:47:00 maybe the bois disabled it - happens when you use non on board sound , check there noone (22)
303167 2004-12-16 01:24:00 Hi just out of curiosity what model is your Mobo? Have u tried looking at http://www.giga-byte.com they have bios updates and mobo software updates. They might help Overdrive_5000 (4950)
303168 2004-12-16 01:33:00 BUT

If Windows is changing his setting while he is logged out and away...

Then he has some much bigger problems than his sound card! :O

303170 2004-12-16 03:00:00 Thanks for the comments guys. Some things I forgot to mention:

*WinXP SP2 (Home Ed)
*Realtek AC97 audio drivers
*Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 865PE USB2.0 6-ch audio 8xAGP FSB800 Dual-ch DDR400 Serial ATA built-in 2004 GT EDITION
*Nothing was disabled in the BIOS - I even tried manually disabling, uninstalling drivers, then re-enabling.
*Set up for 2 speaker setup (as I have 2 speakers)
*Everything was set up properly (as it was working), and I didn't touch anything between the time it worked and the time it broke.
*No BIOS updates etc. as nothing was broken (if it ain't broke, don't fix it:))

Also, some other family members did use the computer between the time it did work and the time it broke down. One of them heard a vague "pop" at one stage while using the PC, so could that be a problem?

I have inspected the mobo and nothing appears to have blown up.

303171 2004-12-16 03:05:00 Well, if that's the case I fear you may be out of luck :(.

What does Device Manager have to say?
