303063 2004-12-16 09:55:00 The Omega Drivers sound intriguing - presumably they are different from the ATI set.

As for the spinning down, what's happening it does this "thing", is it's exactly what would happen if I chose "Standby" when closing down the computer (excepting the Blue Screen, of course - Could NFS:U be doing something to trigger that?

A reinstall of Windows is a possibility, but the system is only two weeks old from new. It was a major hassle getting all the little bits and pieces of software, with all the updates, it would be a big hassle to reinstall windows if it wasn't absolutely necessary - I'll leave that until last, if nothing else works...

I've yet to try the DEP thing (what does DEP stand for?), or anything else - I've only just got home, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow night, but if there are any more ideas, that would be great.

Cheers

303064 2004-12-16 10:09:00 yeap, ive got these omega drivers, theres actually a new version out, and yes they are competely different from ATI and ATI dont want anything to do with them, you can also overclock your card which is pretty sweet, try it :) Prescott (11)
303065 2004-12-16 10:15:00 If you want to use Catalysts and overclock with a non-XT card use ATiTool - its very good and has 2D and 3D profiles so you only overclock the card for gaming etc :) HadO (796)
303066 2004-12-16 10:37:00 I am honestly putting my money on the hard drive. ALL these symptoms indicate a hard drive spinning down momentarily problem.

When the game briefly freezes, the HDD may have briefly lost power.
When the blue screen happens, the HDD might have fully lost power and turned off.

Check the connector. Boot up, go into BIOS or just prevent it from booting in some way, and wiggle the connector. See if the hard drive turns off and on. Or, when things happen, listen carefully to see if you hear the hard drive spinning up or down.

I have seen this exact thing several times before, and in every case to date it has either been a faulty plug (new PSU, or just use a different connector), or a faulty socket on the hard drive (new hard drive, or solder job if it's out of warranty. Which yours is not).

303067 2004-12-16 11:24:00 george12> that is possible but the blue screen can be any number of things from power to heat to drivers to bad hardware etc...

I remember that the problem I had with the game "freezing" for a second and then fast forwarding was with NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and didn't have that prob with Underground - I cant remember the cause but I'm sure it was related to video drivers/settings.

NFSHP2 could have been such a better game if it was put together properly... there was untold amounts of bugs in it IMO

303068 2004-12-16 20:44:00 No one else has suggested this, but it could be your RAM causing the problem. There's a lot of cheap and nasty ram being sold at the moment.

My 2 cents worth.

303069 2004-12-16 23:35:00 I have to agree with that one, RAM also seems a very likely cause. In fact if I push my RAM I get the same symptoms, sort of.

If I push my RAM too far above DDR400 (not intended, just overclocking and forget to change the RAM : FSB ratio), I get the HDD spins down, and blue screen. My PC does emergency reboot about 2 seconds later, but otherwise the same.

Jerkiness in game is likely to me AGP or video card drivers, so I recommend deleting and reinstalling these.

303070 2004-12-17 08:14:00 Tried disabling DEP? It's caused a large amount of problems for me. (same motherboard, Athlon 64 3200+, and a Geforce 6800GT.)
To disable DEP, go start, run, type msconfig, click boot.ini, and find "NoExecute" under operating systems. Change it to "NoExecute=AlwaysOff"
This is assuming you have SP2 installed. If not, I'm not sure if XP pre SP2 had DEP.
When I go into Boot.ini in MSCONFIG I can see the entry I need to change, but not how to change it. I click on the entry, but it won't let me edit it... ???
