304238 2004-12-16 23:57:00 I have in my Start > Programs > Startup folder on my work PC an icon for "Microsoft Office Startup" which runs "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE" -b -l - what is this used for, and is it needed? Is it similar to the old Office Findfast slowdown utility?

Windows 2000
Office 2002

Thanks,
Mike.

304239 2004-12-17 00:00:00 No this is for the office shortcut bar, which appears on the righthand side of the screen, when u boot the system up. Its an easier way of selecting the MS Office programs. U dont need it, but if u use the office programs a lot, its good to have it. So, u just go to it, and select whatever program to run it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
304240 2004-12-17 00:01:00 Osa.exe is the Office Startup Assistant, basically all it does is preloads certain Office files so your Office programs will load faster.

You can safely remove this item from the startup folder if you do not want this runnning in the background. Doing this will free up some extra ram, but will add a few seconds to the loading times of applications such as Word, Excel etc, and will remove the shortcut bar.

304241 2004-12-17 00:08:00 The Office Startup Assistant (Osa.exe or OSA) is a program that (supposedly :D ) improves the performance of Office programs. It initializes the shared code that is used by the Office programs. When you use the Osa.exe file to initialize shared code, the Office programs start faster. If the Office programs, instead of Osa.exe, initialize the shared code, the programs take longer to start.

The Osa.exe file does the following:
Initializes automation.
Initializes some of the common fonts installed by Office.
Handles certain commands (New Office Document, Open Office Document, Help, and Screen Saver) on the All Programs menu (click Start).
Displays Microsoft Outlook notifications when the Office Assistant is available.

304242 2004-12-17 00:48:00 Yes it is ike the old findfast but unlike that one this one does actually improve things slightly, I however usually disable it as It is not needed unless you use office a lot. Odin (227)
304243 2004-12-17 00:52:00 OSA.exe is a resource hog, not as bad as Find Fast/Fast Find though. If you generally load an Office app once in awhile or tend to load and leave the app running, knock OSA on the head in the suggested manner. Murray P (44)
