305464 2004-12-19 03:13:00 I have Pent 2 with 500Mhz, 192 Ram and Win XP Home.
Task manager shows 80 Mb free.
Were are the rest of Ram MBs?
Is it in Sys cache, that is 110MB?
And what PF usage tells, is virtual memory or includes some of RAM?

Any ideas?
By the way, I need all available memory for Speech recognitin.
Thanks in advance.

305465 2004-12-19 03:16:00 as for where all the memory is gone - xp and your background apps ( firewall , virus checker etc ) require memory so they will use it hence you will have less memory free then the total amount of memory you have noone (22)
305466 2004-12-19 03:19:00 System Cache uses the Physical Memory (not the page file). Growly (6)

You could always try using a ram 'free-er-up-er' program?
I use to use one called RamScrubber that worked well.

305468 2004-12-19 04:29:00 Hi taly.
You might like to have a read here:

The following is a brief extract:
Why is there so little Free RAM?
Windows will always try to find some use for all of RAM — even a trivial one. If nothing else it will retain code of programs in RAM after they exit, in case they are needed again. Anything left over will be used to cache further files — just in case they are needed. But these uses will be dropped instantly should some other use come along. Thus there should rarely be any significant amount of RAM ‘free’. That term is a misnomer — it ought to be ‘RAM for which Windows can currently find no possible use’. The adage is: ‘Free RAM is wasted RAM’. Programs that purport to ‘manage’ or ‘free up’ RAM are pandering to a delusion that only such ‘Free’ RAM is available for fresh uses. That is not true, and these programs often result in reduced performance and may result in run-away growth of the page file.

305469 2004-12-19 08:35:00 It will all be used up. My old machine with 128Mb ram always had about 110Mb used up straight after startup. I guess Windows XP could be the only greedy one. Nowadays, I have 512Mb ram and usually use up about just under 200Mb without any thing operating.

Another words, Windows XP is a fat greedy pig who will take all it can.
