305317 2004-12-18 21:52:00 Hi,

Today I downloaded our digicam to my folder on the laptop and have somehow overwritten a number of very important photos(daughters 5th birthday and xmas play) . I really need some help and advice in how to get these back or I may be taking photos of my divorce papers(Mrs miknz has turned a little sour) .
I am running winxp pro with sp2

I know I should have backed up to cd but hindsight is 20 20, I have tried restoring to system restore point made in friday but did not change anything .
For the love of god someone please tell me what I want to hear :help:

Cheers

305319 2004-12-18 22:12:00 Not much help but you could look for "lost photos" or such in the search. mark c (247)
305320 2004-12-18 22:14:00 What is this link for? miknz (3731)
305321 2004-12-18 22:54:00 That link is for a file recovery program, where the file has been "deleted"

In your case the file has been "overwritten" however, and not deleted.

I would not give up without trying, but depending on relative file sizes etc, it's not good news I suspect. It's not a deleted file, but one which has had all its contents changed, so unsure what there could be to recover.

305322 2004-12-18 23:54:00 Do a search for image or photo recovery . There are lot's of general recovery programmes, but more importantly for you, specific image recovery programmes which can (if your lucky) recover/deceminate corrupted information from image files .

Another thought is that windows is no longer recognising the files as image files or doesn't know what to associate them with . Have a look in Documents & Settings >> any temp folders and also your camera download temp folder or archive if it has one, for any files that are not associated or strange file types . Good luck .

Noone, I don't know how others feel, but I get really peeved when people link directly to a download without giving any info on the file . It's like, take this trust me, it's safe, it will work on your system, there are no special instructions . You should let people have the opportunity to read about a file for themselves by linking to the download page or adding instruction in your post . The other problem I have with it, happens when the link is broken and the url doesn't give a very descriptive name so that an alternative can be easily found .

Your not the only one (just the noone ;) ) that does it, so it's not a personal prode at you, K :)

305323 2004-12-19 00:05:00 sorry - i tend to do it all the time , note taken  noone (22)
305324 2004-12-19 02:31:00 I'm pretty sure that even in the NT file system that the old files aren't overwritten. A new file is written to another place on the disk, then the directory entry is altered to point to the new file.

It's probably possible to recover the old ones. There might even be a programme around to do it. There are commercial organisiations who do file recovery. Their services aren't cheap.

I agree with that Murray and the other thing that peeves me off is when people don't give credit to the poster who originally supplied information on something useful that has not become well known . In this case Metla posted a link to this program one or two weeks ago and it would have been courteous for noone to have acknowledged that .

As Murray said, you are not the only one that does it, so it's not a personal dig at you .
