| 305195 | 2004-12-18 08:27:00 | From about the end of June 2004 I have started to experience a problem during the dial up and connection phase of getting on to my ISP, which is increasingly frustrating my efforts . Once I get connected and operating the data transfer rate seems to be excellent and beyond criticism for a Dial Up connection . It is the getting going phase after connection, that is the issue . To my knowledge others have the same problems . I am aware that the problem exists on: · at least 4 different computers, (4 desktops and one notebook), · at least 4 different locations, one in Christchurch, one in Hamilton and the balance in Whitianga, · at least 3 different operating systems (XP Home, XP Pro, and Win ME), · These others are all Orcon customers, but I have no knowledge of other ISPs . A description of the problem is: When I Dial Up my ISP (Orcon) I am able to connect, and log on with my username and password, (99% of the time) . The problem is that from that point on I usually cannot access either the Net (via Internet Explorer) or my email (via Outlook Express) first time . The machine simply stops and I get the error messages (see below) . However once I do access either of these then I have very satisfactory data transfer rates . I have one site that enables reliable IE access first time (mostly) . After I access this particular site, then I dont have the problem with other sites . But most times I get the error messages as below . I am using a desktop and a notebook machine, with Win XP Home edition as OS, have Nortons Antivirus (ver 9 . 05 . 15) and Zone Alarm (ver 5 . 0 . 590) installed . My desktop machine has 1GB of main memory, a fast processor (2 . 6 GHz ) and plenty of HD capacity . I keep my antivirus files up to date . On the advice of my ISP I have done the following without any solution: · Cleared all temporary and cookies files, · Deleted and reinstalled the network connection, and ditto the Outlook Express Account · Trialed a slow down of my modem to 33 . 6 kb/sec, · Done a full scan for viruses using Nortons · Trialed a disablement of Nortons and Zone Alarm, · Installed, updated and ran AdAware SE Plus, · Had Telcom NZ test my phone line, (They reported that it was below their required standard but have repaired it) . I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base for the Socket Error 11004 (see error message for OE, below) and have noted suggestions that one cause may be that there may be blocked ports (25 and 110 have been mentioned) but I dont understand what I should do to my machine to address these, if indeed they are the problem . Is this related to the function of Zone Alarm? Error messages Internet Explorer If I am attempting access through Internet Explorer, most times I get the standard error message, The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable . The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings . Please try the following: Click the Refresh button, or try again later . If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly . To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options . On the Connections tab, click Settings . The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) . If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings . If you would like Windows to try and discover them, click Detect Network Settings Some sites require 128-bit connection security . Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed . If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it . Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options . On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2 . 0, SSL 3 . 0, TLS 1 . 0, PCT 1 . 0 . Click the Back button to try another link . Cannot find server or DNS Error I have checked all the suggested settings for SSL2 . 0, 3 . 0 and TLS1 . 0 . The DNS settings are those recommended by Orcon . Outlook Express Through Outlook Express I get the following: The host 'pop3 . orcon . net . nz' could not be found . Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly . Account: 'pop3 . orcon . net . nz', Server: 'pop3 . orcon . net . nz', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D I am using the correct settings for pop3, as advised by Orcon . | 305196 | 2004-12-18 08:41:00 | Two things I would try: Disable email scanning on your antivirus program or disable the firewall . Reboot your PC and try checking your mail once again . Email scanning can be a problem, as can firewall settings . The first error is a generic Windows error when a connection cannot be established, the second is when something hinders the connection of OE to the server . |
