304973 2004-12-18 01:42:00 Late last night I saw an advertisement on TV that Kiwi Online, or KOL, was offering unlimited dial-up internet access for only $9.95 per month.
That's the cheapest Iv'e come across so far. But are there catches?
Is anyone here already signed up with them? what are your experiences so far?

Cheers,
Bazman (6587)
304974 2004-12-18 03:09:00 Haven't used them but the budget isp's usually come with the following drawbacks.

1) 0900 ($2+ per minute) technical support
2) Only one e-mail address
3) No webspace
4) TEND to be slower
5) Usually don't offer broadband so you have to change ISP's to migrate to broadband

304975 2004-12-18 05:09:00 I think there were a few posts on KOL on the old forum but I am unable to find them with a search now. From memory the views were not all that favourable. FoxyMX (5)
304976 2004-12-18 05:12:00 I was looking at them as sort of a part time isp for when we go away to our holiday home, where we dont currently have any internet connection.

Do you think they would suit just as a cheapoto be used occasionally?

If you want occasional internet access you can't beat Actrix's one cent per minute plan. It costs $2 per month to maintain the account and $10 to start/top it up then you pay per minute, a bit like prepaid cellphone plans. Quite good if you just require access to check your emails or a quick browse.

Their next plan is $9.95 per month for 30 hours which is equivalent to one of Orcon's dialup plans (I think).

yeah i would rather not have a time limited plan as quite often I end up sitting at home while my parents go out fishing...

304979 2004-12-18 07:37:00 lagbort has a point there - when time is needed this KOL sounds like a good plan - and although it seems like it may be slow or otherwise pathetic it may have a use somewhere.

Then again, could one handle dial up after broadband? It would crush me inside.

304980 2004-12-18 07:43:00 gidday,

I trialed it for twenty four hours a few days ago, and wasnt too impressed,
e-mails hang before sending, had engaged signal 6 times before
connecting, and web pages hung as well before loading.

connection speed was about 50kps.

all in all not the best.

cheers,

Robby

Maybe not then.

Whilst your other points may have been valid, this one is not. For a start the "connection speed" doesn't actually have any bearing whatsoever on the true speed of the connection, secondly it rely's on your hardware, your phoneline, your exchange, the connecting kit, driver versions, phase of the moon, amongst a host of other things.

Cheers
