304866 2004-12-17 13:33:00 Hey guys,

Got my mate an XP3000+ for his computer.

On the pricelist it rates the processor FSB as 333MHz, however I noticed I could not put it up to 2600Mhz (preset in the mobo - asus a7v600-x) and had to settle for 2197Mhz....

If I set it to 2600Mhz it just crashed on startup. So @ 2197Mhz the FSB is set to 166Mhz...

I think weird... i'll sort it out later. Then I see in ASUS probe that the fsb is only set at 166Mhz, and it hits me... the processor must be bung or something.

So I email the folks I got it from (DORNWELL in Mt Roskill, Auckland) and tell them about it and waited for their reply.

They said that the FSB is running at AMD's new standard "Quantispeed" which is 166x2 buses.... wouldn't quantispeed mean four of something...

He did back it up with a log of jargon which i would normally understand but i havnt had time to read it properly yet... just sounded like a lot of excuses as i skimmed it...

So should they give me a new processor? I want my extra 400Mhz... they say mhz dont matter, but its running slower than my XP2600!!!

304867 2004-12-17 13:53:00 They were half right, it does run at 166x2, but that has nothing to do with Quantispeed architecture.

The AMD 3000+ natively runs at 2167MHz. The 3000+ is an AMD naming scheme which helps compare the speeds of AMD CPUs to Intel CPUs.

Your settings are correct, keep the FSB set at 166MHz.

304868 2004-12-17 14:07:00 But its not going at 2600Mhz which it looks to be possible.... will all XP3000's do this? Therefore am I better off getting a XP2600 that'll run at 2300Mhz fsb:333Mhz?

I am aware of the naming scheme... I don't expect the xp3000 to run at 3000mhz...

304869 2004-12-17 14:16:00 When you attempt to run it at 2600Mhz what is your FSB and multiplier? b1naryb0y (3)
304870 2004-12-17 14:31:00 Not sure of the multiplier but the FSB be 333 hamstar (4)
304871 2004-12-17 14:41:00 When running at 2600MHz @ 333MHz it will be using a multiplier of 15.5 (166X15.5)

The 3000+ running at 2167Mhz @ 333MHz will be using a multiplier of 13 (166x13). Since it crashes when running at 2600Mhz, it could mean that it is multiplier locked.

Try running it at a FSB of 200MHz (400MHz) and a multiplier of 13.

304872 2004-12-17 14:56:00 will try... thanks

304873 2004-12-17 20:26:00 You haven't been ripped off. Your just overclocking the machine from it's factory settings. The default settings run at 2.17Ghz. So I suspect, maybe you haven't got enough cooling for the overclocking :illogical ~sy~ (95)
304874 2004-12-17 20:32:00 my 3000+ with a volcano 12 cooler on top will only go to 189fsb which is (189x13) 2457mhz, but that is not really long term stable lagbort (5041)
304875 2004-12-17 21:10:00 when the fsb is set to 200 vcore voltages may not be enough to sustain the new juice required. Unless you want to risk it by changing your voltages around stick to changing the fsb and the cpu multipliers noone (22)
