2004-12-20 00:09:00 | Apple doesn't officially support USB1/1.1 for the ipod. I've tried plugging my 4g 20gb ipod into a USB1 port and it doesn't work other than charge it. You may have to sink $40 or so and get a USB2.0 PCI Card for your computer. Remember that the 4g ipods come with both a USB and Firewire cable. You probably wouldn't want to transfer hundreds of tracks over USB1 anyway - it would take days! - David

2004-12-20 00:13:00 | My 4g Ipod works fine on my dad's laptop, its a compaq armada 1700 (or 700) and it cant even power a usb laptop hdd. The laptop is probably using usb 1.1 as well. EDIT: They dont even make these patops any more.

2004-12-20 00:38:00 | Well if you havent got anything else than the ipod that can take firewire, and do not intend to use sata hdd's then i would choose the usb 2.0 card. | ILikeLinux (1669) | |
2004-12-20 00:52:00 | I use a 15Gb iPod with a PC. I inserted a firewire card into the beast, and had no end of trouble with the iPod crashing the PC (I suspect the problem was with a firewire hub I was using to get the firewire connection from the back of the case on to my desk). Then I bought a flash new PC case with USB and firewire outlets on the front - only problem was my firewire card does not have a connector that mates with the front of case outlet  So I then bought a USB 2.0 iPod cable which does work with my front of case USB outlets and which no longer crashes the PC. :) Somehow I had the idea that firewire was faster than USB 2.0. Wrong. I have an external drive that I use for backups, and it has both firewire and USB 2.0 connectors. As far as I can work out from trying both, USB 2.0 is faster than firewire. I have also used the iPod with my Fujitsu laptop which does have firewire, but you have to use the mini firewire plug - it means you can connect but cannot charge the iPod from the lappie.

2004-12-20 05:11:00 | awwww crap. i've got USB 1.1, and no way to put in a new card :( is it a little midget case? they are damn annoying how they are that small, i had to do a few mods to get my graphics card to fit, i made a few cuts here and there and it just fits, same goes with my burner, its about 1.5-2.5 cm longer than my other cd driver and it also just fits and the calbes behind it just sqeeze in between them, thank god to those rounded ide cables, sure worth the money. what do these usb 1.1 plugs look like? do they look the same as the new ones?

2004-12-20 05:32:00 | A lesson learned. DON'T BUY AN iProd :badpc::badpc: In theory it should work perfectly. My friends Creative muvo2 4gb works just like a large usb keyring/removable hdd when connected to my pc which has usb 1.1 But then again its an iPod you have...... so don't count on theory! Apple:badpc: :D
