| 305879 | 2004-12-19 23:16:00 | I was thinking of buying an external hard drive, but was quite amazed at how the prices are of these things. Does anyone have a feeling that the prices will drop withing the coming, say, 3-6 months? do you think the demand will grow and they'll be a rage like the USB flash drives? coz the prices of those have really dropped dramatically. I still paid over $100 for a 128mb flash drive this time last year. And would anyone happen to know where I may find the cheapest external hard-drives around currently? I already checked out dick smiths and pp.co.nz , but theirs prices are too high. |

If so, I would check the BIOS, to see if there's an option to boot from USB/USB2. If there isnt, I doubt booting from a USB 2 device will work. |

I would buy the bits seperatly, eg. a HD case USB2 and a HD whatever size you need, probally wont be any cheaper tho. |

| 305884 | 2004-12-20 03:01:00 | Flashcards (Flashcards.co.nz) have 2.5" external (USB or USB) cases for quite reasonable prices. You have to supply the disk drive ... but they have them too. | Graham L (2) | ||
| 305885 | 2004-12-21 01:13:00 | I'm basically looking for a plug-'n-play external disk. Like a USB flash, but with much greater storage capacity. I have Win XP Pro, and I don't want to boot from it. Basically just to carry large files from home to school/work or vice versa, or use it as a temporary storage when installing a new OS or re-installeing an OS on my computer. Thanks for the TradeMe link, unfortunately I didn't find any drives that were significantly cheaper than what the retailers ask. |

| 305886 | 2004-12-21 01:33:00 | Check out Fujitsu DynaDisQ - it is essentially a Notebook harddrive in an external drive caddy made from Al and USB 2.0 compatible. i have one with a 40GB HDD in it - it was only about $250 all up, can be expanded one day with a bigger HDD , and is much smaller than a regular external drive. It is about the size of a PDA, and comes with a protective leather case. It is more expensive than regular external drives, but only marginally, very robust with the Al case, and very compact compared with other externals. GP |

| 305888 | 2004-12-21 03:20:00 | How does $162 for 30GB sound? That's for USB 2.0 box and a Samsung drive. A USB/firewire box costs $33 more. flashcards (www.flashcards.co.nz) have Toshiba drives too. Of course they have bigger drives too. | Graham L (2) | ||
