| 305738 | 2004-12-19 21:27:00 | Hi, i have a real big problem i think. You see i just scanned my pc for viruses and found one that I couldnt seem to delete so i updated my virus definitions and tried again, i still couldnt delete it. Then i decided to search for the virus is all my files. I found it using the search function thingy and there were three files. one was an application i couldnt delete and the other two i deleted very fast without lookin at them in my rush to remove the virus. (i had 11 viruses to get through so i was in a hurry :groan: ) I restarted my PC because i was told to a little later for another reason and when it started up it said there was an error with Wupdater, send or dont send report. I clicked dont send and the computer restarted without me telling it to. since then i havent had any errors but dousnt deleting Wupdater mean I cant update windows and is this as bad as it sounds? I have windows XP and i think thats all youll need to know about my PC, and I used nortan antivirus to scan the virus. Please could someone tell me what to do, if i have to do anything anyway. Could I download the same files from a web site or is Wupdater nothing important...Please help... By the way Im 15 so dont have a cow if i dont use technical mumbo jumbo and the likes! Thanks for any help in advance!!! |

| 305739 | 2004-12-19 21:37:00 | wupdater.exe is not Windows Updater or part of the Windows system files, but was probably part of some program you downloaded (perhaphs screensaver) or even to do with that virus you removed. Can you remember the name of that virus? If you run Windows Update it still should function correctly. | Jen (38) | ||
| 305740 | 2004-12-19 21:40:00 | Dont worrie about virus, most scanners over react with the warning they give. Do a system restore if you can, to get your computer running properly again. Try again with your scanner in safe mode Try the stinger (vil.nai.com) Only after your computer is running properly turn off system restore, if the scanners are unable to remove the virus. Read the help files about system restore. |

| 305741 | 2004-12-19 21:49:00 | Hmm ... just had another look at wupdater, and it is probably more spyware related. Do you use Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) and/or Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org)? It would pay to download and give those a run as well. | Jen (38) | ||

It pays to have all your programs and files backed up to disk just in case . That is not quite correct, Johnboy . System Restore WILL cause recently installed programs to be lost as well as updates and other Windows changes since the last restore point . Files and data, including items downloaded and saved into the My Documents folder, etc, will not not lost, however . If they were saved, the installation files of programs downloaded can be used to reinstall programs after reverting to a previous restore point . |

| 305747 | 2004-12-21 02:22:00 | As well as losing recently installed Programs with System restore, you will more than likely re-introduce the virus back into the system because it too will also be "restored". If your Antivirus program now gives the all clear, and you are still getting that message on boot up, it sounds like an entry for it wasn't completely removed from the registry. Have a look at johnboy's links he provided as they should help. |
