305711 2004-12-19 15:51:00 Since installing Windows XP SP2 (or approximately and maybe coincidentally around that time) a slightly worrying error message has begun to appear at reboot:

settings[1].exe
CRC error! File content has been modified.
If you run a debugger, clear all breakpoints before running this program!

Why should my settings file have been altered (presumably since I last logged off)? Is this an SP2 bug [is there a fix?] or something I should be *really* worried about?

Virus checker (Norton 2004) and spyware scanner (Spybot) show nothing suspicious.

AMD processor; Windows XP Professional with SP2.

Thanks

305712 2004-12-19 19:23:00 go to start/run and type msconfig. Look under startup tab, that entry might be here. If it is, look and see which folder it's coming from...Also, if its there and its annoying you untick it. And reboot. Somehow, I dont think its a SP2 error. Its not on this. Speedy Gonzales (78)
305713 2004-12-19 20:29:00 try a sfc (run type in "sfc")you will need your install disk crc is a check on file integerity a miss-match in the os database can be caused by virus activity or service packing sfc may update the crc check sums on your system beama (111)
305714 2004-12-19 20:48:00 Keep in mind that if you carry out the sfc /scannow check, you will be returning your system to pre SP2, or even SP1 if your XP CD doesn't say it has SP1.

All it does is compare the files on your system to those from the XP install CD and if different, copies the file from the CD, overwriting the one on your computer.

Does not sfc also check the i386 folders for service packs, (MS) signed drivers and updated system files? My understanding is that it does .
